Some people taking GLP-1 medicines have reported brittle nails and slower nail growth, but the available guidance does not establish that the drugs directly cause these changes or show how often they occur. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) connects the reports with significant weight loss and recommends moisturizing cuticles; persistent symptoms are a reason to consult a dermatologist.
What nail changes have been reported?
The AAD says some patients have reported slower nail growth and brittle nails after starting GLP-1 medicines. Its examples of GLP-1 receptor agonists include semaglutide, liraglutide, and tirzepatide, sold under brand names including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound. Are the medicines causing the nail changes?
That has not been established. The AAD associates the reported changes with significant weight loss, but the evidence cited does not determine whether the medicine itself, weight loss, or another factor is responsible. It is therefore more accurate to describe brittle or slower-growing nails as reported changes during GLP-1 treatment, not as a proven direct drug side effect.

The FDA’s summary of potential GLP-1 safety signals and labeling updates includes topics such as alopecia and aspiration, but its cited section does not list a nail-change update. That absence is not a ruling that no nail reports exist. See the FDA’s postmarket drug safety information.

How common are brittle nails on GLP-1 drugs?
The sources cited here do not provide a nail-specific incidence rate. General adverse-event totals cannot be used to calculate how likely nail changes are, and the available information does not support calling them common.
The FDA’s FAERS database collects reports from manufacturers, consumers, and health professionals and is updated quarterly. These spontaneous reports help identify issues for evaluation, but they do not by themselves establish how often an event occurs or prove that a medicine caused it. What can you do about nail changes?
Try basic cuticle care
The AAD recommends moisturizing cuticles. A hand cream or cuticle moisturizer can help with hydration and comfort, but this guidance does not establish that moisturizer reverses or prevents slower nail growth or brittleness.
Contact a dermatologist if symptoms persist
If nail, skin, or hair symptoms continue despite self-care, the AAD advises consulting a dermatologist. A dermatologist can help assess whether the change may be related to the medicine or to another condition. Do not stop or change a prescribed GLP-1 medicine based on nail changes alone; discuss medication concerns with the clinician who prescribed it.
