GlobalFoundries described a three-stage plan for its 7nm FinFET process in 2017, moving from optical lithography to EUV and then refining the EUV process. The roadmap was a plan, not proof that all three stages reached production: in August 2018, the company said it was putting its 7nm FinFET program on hold indefinitely.
What “7nm” meant in GlobalFoundries’ plan
The name referred to GlobalFoundries’ 7LP, or “7nm Leading-Performance,” FinFET manufacturing process—not to a consumer chip model. In a June 2017 announcement, the company said design kits were available and forecast first customer products for the first half of 2018, with volume production ramping in the second half of that year. Those were forecasts made at the time, not confirmation that the milestones occurred. GlobalFoundries’ 2017 7LP announcement
GlobalFoundries claimed the process would provide a 40 percent generational performance boost compared with its 14nm FinFET technology. That figure was the company’s stated comparison; the cited announcement does not present it as an independently tested result.

| Stage | Planned approach | Intended benefit or focus |
|---|---|---|
| First generation | Conventional deep ultraviolet (DUV), also called optical lithography | The initial 7nm process. GlobalFoundries said in June 2017 that the initial production ramp would use optical lithography. |
| Second generation | Introduce extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography | Reduce reliance on triple and quadruple patterning, along with the associated mask counts and manufacturing cost. |
| Third generation | Further refine the EUV process | Address line-edge roughness, uniformity, and other process issues. The 2017 report did not quantify expected gains, beyond anticipating lower power and higher performance than previous products. |
GlobalFoundries’ June 2017 announcement likewise described an optical-lithography initial ramp, followed by a move to EUV when the technology was ready for volume manufacturing. The three-stage description was therefore a roadmap of intended development, not a schedule showing that EUV generations had shipped.
Why the process was put on hold
On August 27, 2018, GlobalFoundries announced that it was putting its 7nm FinFET program “on hold indefinitely.” The company said it would redirect development resources toward its 14/12nm FinFET platform and differentiated offerings, including RF, embedded memory, and low-power features. CEO Tom Caulfield explained the company’s customer-economics rationale in that release: “The vast majority of today’s fabless customers are looking to get more value out of each technology generation to leverage the substantial investments required to design into each technology node.” This is GlobalFoundries’ stated strategic view, not independent evidence that all customers shared it.

The hold announcement changes how to read the earlier roadmap: its 2017 stages and dates describe what the company intended, while the verified public status update in the sources cited here is the indefinite hold. Those sources do not establish whether any planned generation reached customer production before the hold, or whether a later public announcement changed the program’s status.

FX-7 was a related business offering, not a consumer chip
In June 2017, GlobalFoundries also announced FX-7, an ASIC offering based on its 7nm FinFET technology. It named data centers, machine learning, automotive, wired communications, and 5G wireless as target application areas, and forecast volume production in 2019. That date was a company forecast, not confirmation that FX-7 entered production. FX-7 was an industrial ASIC platform for business customers, not a consumer product recommendation. What the roadmap does—and does not—show
- It shows the intended lithography progression: DUV first, then EUV, then further EUV process refinement.
- It records company targets and forecasts from 2017, including a claimed performance gain and expected production milestones.
- It does not show that all three stages shipped. GlobalFoundries’ 2018 statement put the program on hold indefinitely, and the cited sources do not confirm a later status change.
