To control which movies a friend can see in Jellyfin, give them a separate user account and assign it only the libraries and permissions they need. You can tailor each account without sharing your own login. For the question “How do I hide some movies from a Jellyfin user?”, the key is to organize the media into libraries and grant that account access only to the appropriate ones.
How a separate Jellyfin account changes what a friend sees
Jellyfin users are local to your server, and each account can have its own settings and permissions. Jellyfin’s official Users documentation says: “Keep in mind that Jellyfin users are entirely local and no information or metadata will ever be sent to remote servers during the login process.”
A friend’s view is determined by the libraries and features you allow for their account. If your media is already arranged into separate libraries, you can give a friend access to selected libraries rather than sharing everything. If the titles you want to keep separate are all in a library the friend can access, consider whether organizing them into distinct libraries better matches the access you want to grant.

- Create a separate user. In the Jellyfin server, open the user-management area and add an account for your friend. You can create users after completing the initial setup wizard; consult the current Jellyfin Users guide for version-specific interface details.
- Set library access. Edit the new user’s permissions and select only the libraries they should be able to browse and play. Check the account’s access after saving; do not assume that creating an account alone limits what it can see.
- Choose any additional permissions deliberately. User settings can control playback and transcoding, deletion, account disabling, and whether the user appears on the login screen. Enable only what the friend needs.
- Keep server management for trusted administrators. Jellyfin warns that permission to manage the server grants full access to server pages and features. A friend who only needs to watch media should use a regular account, not an administrator account.
Be especially careful with deletion
Deletion permission is more consequential than hiding a title from view. Jellyfin’s documentation notes that media may be removed from the filesystem if the server has write permission. Leave deletion disabled unless you specifically want the user to be able to remove media and understand how your server handles those files.

Decide whether access is local or remote
If your friend will watch while connected to your home network, configure their account for that use. If they need to connect from outside your home, account permissions are only part of the job: Jellyfin is self-hosted, so your network must also be configured to make the server reachable. Jellyfin’s Networking guide describes global and per-user external-access controls and common approaches such as a reverse proxy or VPN.
Jellyfin cautions: “Opening a port directly to the Internet is therefore insecure and not recommended.” Avoid treating port forwarding as an automatic or risk-free sharing switch. Choose a remote-access method that suits your network, configure it deliberately, and use the current networking documentation rather than copying settings intended for a different setup.

Help your friend sign in on a TV or other device
Your friend can sign in with the account credentials you created using a supported Jellyfin client. On some clients, Quick Connect makes sign-in easier: the new device displays a temporary code, and you authorize it from a client where you are already logged in. Quick Connect support varies by app, so check whether the friend’s client offers it in Jellyfin’s client documentation.

Quick Connect is only a login convenience. It does not create a separate user or change which libraries and features that user can access; set those permissions on the server first.

What this kind of sharing does—and does not—mean
This approach is for sharing your own Jellyfin server and lawful media with people you choose. Jellyfin says it does not run general-purpose servers for users, so creating an account on your server is not the same as subscribing to an official Jellyfin-hosted media service.
