To track GitHub Code Quality configuration changes, search your organization audit log for repo.code_quality_enabled, repo.code_quality_disabled, and repo.code_quality_updated. The events identify whether Code Quality was enabled, disabled, or updated for a repository, and their records can provide actor, repository, timestamp, and operation context.

Which audit-log events should you search?

GitHub’s organization audit-log event reference lists three Code Quality events:

Event GitHub’s description What it tells you
repo.code_quality_enabled Code Quality was enabled for a repository. An enablement was recorded for a repository.
repo.code_quality_disabled Code Quality was disabled for a repository. A disablement was recorded for a repository.
repo.code_quality_updated Code Quality was updated for a repository. A repository configuration update was recorded; the event description does not specify which setting changed.

Search for all three if you need a full change history. Searching only for the enabled event will miss disablements and other recorded updates.

How to investigate a recorded change

Open the matching organization audit-log entry and inspect the fields it actually contains. GitHub lists fields such as @timestamp, action, actor, actor_id, created_at, operation_type, org, repo, repo_id, repository, repository_id, user, and user_id. Some event field sets also include public_repo and user_programmatic_access_name. Fields vary, so do not assume every event includes every value.

  • Use the actor or user fields to identify the account associated with the recorded action.
  • Use the repository name or ID to establish which repository the event concerns.
  • Use the timestamp and operation context to place the change in sequence with related activity.

The repo.code_quality_updated description does not say which configuration value changed. Treat it as evidence of an update, not as proof of a particular setting change.

Choose audit-log searches or webhooks by monitoring need

The audit log is useful for investigating recorded organization events and reviewing who changed a repository’s Code Quality configuration. For ongoing notification and logging of selected events, GitHub notes that webhooks may be more efficient than repeated audit-log searches or API polling. Check current webhook documentation for event coverage, payload details, and delivery behavior before building an alert around a specific Code Quality change; the audit-log reference alone does not establish those details.

Understand what an organization-level change means

Code Quality can be enabled for an individual repository or through an organization’s repository access setting. An organization can target all repositories, selected repositories, or repositories matching a filter. An audit-log entry identifies a recorded repository event; interpret it alongside the organization’s access settings when you need to understand whether the change came from an individual repository decision or an organization rollout.

GitHub Code Quality is available on GitHub Team and GitHub Enterprise Cloud and requires GitHub Actions to be enabled. Repository owners, organization owners, and users with the admin role may enable it where the applicable plan and enterprise policies permit. Enterprise owners control organization access and repository administrator policy. See GitHub’s guides to enabling GitHub Code Quality and allowing Code Quality in an enterprise for the applicable controls.

Organization defaults are not always enforcement

Setting an organization’s repository access to “No repositories” turns off repositories that follow the organization default. It does not by itself turn off repositories that administrators explicitly enabled. Enforcement is required to prevent repository administrators from changing the organization’s decision.

Rollout timing and scan activity

GitHub says organization changes begin propagating immediately and may take several minutes in large organizations. The change review dialog shows enabled and disabled repository totals and associated costs. GitHub recommends piloting Code Quality with a small group and tuning quality thresholds before enabling it broadly.

These are scan-operation details, not audit-log retention periods.

Account for disablement and billing separately

Disabling Code Quality stops future scans and the GitHub Actions minutes and AI credits those scans use. License charges may continue for a period after disablement. GitHub also says a billing period’s charge can reflect the highest license use during that period, rather than the ending license count. As a result, disabling Code Quality may free licenses for a later billing period without lowering the charge for the current one. See GitHub’s disablement guidance for these billing and access details.
