A Git merge conflict means Git cannot safely choose which competing content should remain. A Lambda HTTP 200, meanwhile, can confirm that an invocation request succeeded without confirming that the function completed successfully. In both cases, the useful question is not just what the system reported, but what decision it made and what the signal actually proves.
Why is Git refusing to merge?
Git merges compatible changes automatically. It stops when changes leave no safe way to select the final content—for example, when both branches edit the same line, or one changes a file while the other deletes it. Git is not declaring the work impossible; it is asking a person to decide what the merged version should contain.
As GitHub Docs puts it, “Merge conflicts block merging because Git cannot safely choose which version of the conflicting content to keep.” GitHub Docs explains merge conflicts and resolution.

Resolution is a content decision: determine what should exist after the branches are combined. The correct result might use one side’s change, the other side’s change, or a deliberate combination. Conflict markers identify the contested area; they are not a recommendation about which text to keep.
#1 Best Overall
After editing, check that the final file expresses the intended result, remove any conflict markers, and complete the merge by committing the resolution when required by your workflow. A conflict-free merge is not proof that the result is logically correct, so review the merged code before pushing it.
What does a Lambda 200 response mean?
First identify which interface returned the status. “HTTP 200” can describe different layers: a direct Lambda Invoke API request, an API Gateway response, or a Lambda Function URL response. Those responses do not all certify the same thing.
Rank #2
For the direct Lambda Invoke API, the status depends on the invocation type. A 200 for RequestResponse means the synchronous invocation request succeeded at the API level; it does not, by itself, mean the function ran without an error. AWS says the HTTP status code does not reflect function errors. Check the response’s FunctionError field and payload too.
Direct Lambda Invoke modes
| Invocation type | What the caller gets | What the status establishes |
|---|---|---|
RequestResponse |
The caller waits for processing and receives the invocation result. | HTTP 200 indicates a successful synchronous invocation request. Inspect FunctionError and the payload for execution errors. |
Event |
The invocation is asynchronous: Lambda accepts the event and returns without waiting for the function’s result. | HTTP 202 indicates acceptance, not successful completion or a particular eventual result. |
DryRun |
The request checks whether the caller is authorized and whether the specified function exists, without running it. | HTTP 204 indicates the check succeeded; no function result was produced. |
These semantics are specific to the direct Invoke API. AWS describes the broader distinction between synchronous and asynchronous Lambda invocation: synchronous callers receive a result, while asynchronous invocation lets the caller continue after the event is accepted.
Request errors versus function errors
A request can fail before the function successfully runs—for example, because of an invocation or authorization problem. That is different from a function that runs and reports an execution error. For synchronous Invoke calls, a 200 does not rule out the latter; inspect FunctionError and the returned payload. For asynchronous work, an accepted event does not contain the function’s eventual result, so use the applicable logs or result-handling path to determine what happened.
How API Gateway changes what the response tells you
For API Gateway REST API non-proxy Lambda integrations, invocation is synchronous by default. You can configure asynchronous invocation by setting the integration request’s X-Amz-Invocation-Type header to Event. In that setup, the front-end method returns without the Lambda processing result. See AWS’s instructions for setting up asynchronous Lambda invocation in API Gateway.
Do not generalize that configuration to every API Gateway setup. Proxy integrations and HTTP APIs have different integration and response behavior; a client-facing status can be shaped by the configured integration rather than serving as a direct readout of Lambda execution. AWS documents the API Gateway and Lambda integration behavior.

What a Lambda Function URL’s 200 says
A Function URL turns the function’s response into an HTTP response, so its status belongs to that endpoint’s response mapping—not to the direct Invoke API’s status rules. In particular, when a function returns valid JSON without a statusCode field, Lambda assumes a 200 response. That status alone is therefore not evidence that the function performed the intended business operation. Check what the function returned and whether the response format conveys the outcome your caller needs.

See AWS’s documentation on invoking a function through Lambda Function URLs for the response conversion behavior.
Quick Recap
Debugging checklist: establish what happened
- Identify the caller and endpoint. Determine whether the response came from the direct Lambda Invoke API, API Gateway, or a Function URL.
- Find the invocation mode. For direct Invoke, distinguish
RequestResponse,Event, andDryRun. For API Gateway, check the integration type and whether asynchronous invocation is configured. - Inspect the right evidence. For synchronous direct Invoke, review
FunctionErrorand the payload as well as the HTTP status. For API Gateway or a Function URL, interpret the client response according to that endpoint’s integration and response mapping. - Trace background work to its outcome. An asynchronous acceptance response is not the eventual result. Use the relevant logs or a later result-retrieval path to establish whether processing succeeded.
- For a Git conflict, review the chosen content. Resolve the contested lines or file state, verify the resulting file, and commit the resolution before treating the merge as complete.
