The GIGABYTE TRX50 AERO D is an E-ATX motherboard for AMD’s sTR5 Threadripper platform. Its revision 1.1 specification combines four-channel registered DDR5 memory, three PCIe 5.0 M.2 sockets, two PCIe 5.0 x16 slots, USB4, and 10GbE networking. It suits workstation builders who need fast I/O and support for both standard Threadripper and Threadripper PRO processors, but it offers four memory channels—not WRX90-class expansion—and has no BMC. Check CPU, BIOS, and memory support for the exact board revision before buying.

What this review establishes

The TRX50 AERO D occupies a middle position between consumer Ryzen boards and higher-end WRX90 workstation boards. ServeTheHome’s review, published September 30, 2026, describes TRX50 as supporting standard Threadripper and Threadripper PRO while providing four memory channels and a reduced workstation feature set compared with WRX90. That makes this board a fit for a capable creator or compute workstation that values connectivity and expansion, but does not require the larger platform’s full memory-channel count or workstation management features.

This is a specification-led assessment, not a benchmark verdict. The accessible text of the ServeTheHome review ends at its performance section heading, so it does not establish performance scores or comparative test results. Manufacturer specifications describe supported features and advertised limits; they are not measured performance.

Which Threadripper CPUs work with the TRX50 AERO D?

GIGABYTE lists AMD Ryzen Threadripper 7000 and 9000 series processors, as well as Threadripper PRO 7000-WX and 9000-WX series processors, for sTR5. The exact CPU and minimum BIOS depend on the board revision and support-list entry. Use GIGABYTE’s CPU support page for the revision you are buying; do not assume that support for one revision or BIOS applies to another.

Memory: four registered DIMMs and four channels

Revision 1.1 has four DDR5 ECC Registered RDIMM or RDIMM-3DS sockets in a quad-channel arrangement, with a stated maximum capacity of 1 TB. This is a registered-memory platform: ordinary desktop unbuffered UDIMMs are not listed as supported, so do not plan a build around them.

GIGABYTE lists JEDEC rates of DDR5-4400, 4800, and 5200, alongside higher EXPO/XMP overclocked rates up to DDR5-8000. The 8000 figure is an advertised overclocking ceiling, not a guaranteed operating speed. Actual memory type, supported speed, and usable module configuration depend on the CPU and DIMMs installed. Check the revision-specific memory support list and processor support details before selecting a kit.

Expansion, storage, and graphics

The revision 1.1 board provides three CPU-integrated x16 slots: two with PCIe 5.0 support and one at PCIe 4.0. GIGABYTE says an x16 slot can be used for a graphics card or an NVMe SSD and recommends the first slot for a single graphics card. Slot spacing and card dimensions still matter when planning a multi-card build; check the board layout and case clearance against the cards and cooling hardware you intend to use.

Storage options comprise three PCIe 5.0 M.2 sockets and one PCIe 4.0 M.2 socket, plus eight SATA 6 Gb/s connectors. The three PCIe 5.0 sockets support the sizes and lane modes specified by GIGABYTE for each socket; the fourth is a PCIe 4.0 x4/x2 socket in 2280 format. The specifications list RAID 0, 1, and 10 for NVMe and SATA storage.

ServeTheHome’s described layout has no SlimSAS/Mini-SAS HD-style storage connections. If your workstation plan depends on those connectors or extensive enterprise storage, compare the specific board layout with a WRX90 alternative rather than treating the eight SATA ports as a substitute.

Networking and rear I/O

GIGABYTE specifies two rear USB4 Type-C ports, one with DisplayPort capability; four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A ports; four USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports; two RJ-45 network ports; audio jacks; and antenna connectors. The board’s wired networking is 10GbE plus 2.5GbE, and wireless connectivity is Wi-Fi 7 with Bluetooth 5.3. ServeTheHome describes the USB-C ports as 40Gbps and notes that the board does not claim Thunderbolt 4 certification; USB4 support should not be read as a claim of Thunderbolt 4 certification.

GIGABYTE notes that Wi-Fi 7 software support requires Windows 11 SV3. Availability of 6 GHz channels depends on local rules. The manufacturer lists Windows 11 64-bit OS support; check the current support and driver pages for the operating system and configuration you plan to run.

How it compares with WRX90—and what it lacks

The practical distinction is platform scale. TRX50 offers four memory channels and supports both standard and PRO Threadripper families, while WRX90 is the higher workstation tier. This AERO D also lacks a BMC, according to ServeTheHome, and its described storage layout omits SlimSAS/Mini-SAS HD-style connectors. These omissions matter for remotely managed systems or builds designed around enterprise storage cabling.

When comparing boards, evaluate processor support and BIOS requirements, memory channel count and registered-DIMM capacity, PCIe generations and slot spacing, M.2 count and generation, dedicated storage connectors, network speeds, USB4 or Thunderbolt certification, board dimensions, and management features such as a BMC. The best choice depends on which of those capabilities your workload actually needs, rather than on the TRX50 or WRX90 label alone.

Case fit and revision checks

The TRX50 AERO D is E-ATX and measures 30.5 × 26.4 cm according to the revision 1.1 specifications. Confirm that the case explicitly supports those motherboard dimensions and leaves enough room for the board, CPU cooler, graphics cards, and cable routing.

GIGABYTE exposes separate product pages for revisions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2. This article’s detailed figures are for revision 1.1; limits and support information should not be carried across revisions without checking. Before purchase, match the printed revision on the board or listing to the corresponding GIGABYTE support page.

Is the TRX50 AERO D worth considering?

Consider it if you need an sTR5 board that pairs Threadripper or Threadripper PRO support with four-channel registered memory, multiple PCIe 5.0 devices, USB4, and 10GbE-class networking. It is a less appropriate fit if you require more memory channels, a BMC, or SlimSAS/Mini-SAS HD storage connections. The decision also depends on the exact CPU and RDIMM configuration being supported by your board revision and BIOS.

Current price and availability vary by retailer and region; the sources reviewed do not establish a current price. For processor, memory, and revision-specific details, use GIGABYTE’s revision 1.1 specifications and support lists, and treat independent performance claims cautiously unless you can review the underlying results and test conditions.
