A September 2024 retail report put Gigabyte’s X870 motherboard listings between $219 and $799, with the top price attached to the X870E AORUS XTREME AI TOP. Those were historical B&H Photo listings that had been removed by the time of the report—not verified current prices or launch MSRPs. The same report mentioned an MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk Wi-Fi sighting at an Australian retailer but did not give its price.
What the retail report said
HotHardware reported on September 18, 2024 that B&H Photo had listed Gigabyte X870-family motherboards in a range from $219 to $799. The report said the listings had been removed by publication, so the figures describe a dated retail snapshot rather than current stock or pricing. HotHardware’s report
| Board or listing | Reported price | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Gigabyte X870-family listings | $219–$799 | Range reported for B&H Photo listings in September 2024; not a confirmed current price range or launch MSRP. |
| Gigabyte X870E AORUS XTREME AI TOP | $799 | Reported B&H Photo listing price in September 2024; the listing was no longer available when the report was published. |
| Gigabyte X870E AORUS Master | $499 | Reported B&H Photo listing price in September 2024; the listing was no longer available when the report was published. |
| MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk Wi-Fi | Not stated | HotHardware mentioned a retail sighting at Australian retailer It Spot but did not state a price. |
These prices do not establish what the boards cost today, whether they were final launch prices, or whether the Australian MSI sighting was available elsewhere. Check retailer listings in your region before making a purchasing decision.

Both chipsets belong to AMD’s Socket AM5 platform. AMD says AM5 supports Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 series processors; compatibility on a specific board can depend on its BIOS version. AMD identifies USB 4.0, DDR5 memory, processor and memory overclocking, and PCIe 5.0 storage support among the X870 platform features. X870E also includes PCIe 5.0 support for graphics. | Chipset | Total usable PCIe lanes | PCIe 5.0 lanes | AMD’s stated distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| X870E | 44 | Up to 24 | PCIe 5.0 support for graphics and NVMe. |
| X870 | 36 | Up to 24 | PCIe 5.0 support for NVMe. |
These are chipset-level figures and descriptions, not a promise that every board exposes the same slots or ports. A manufacturer decides how a board implements available lanes, and some slots or M.2 sockets may share resources. Consult the exact model’s specifications and manual to confirm the layout.
In its June 2, 2024 announcement, AMD described X870 and X870E as supporting PCIe 5.0, DDR5, USB4, and Wi-Fi 7. AMD also stated: “Socket AM5 platforms are built to last, with support through 2027 and beyond.” That was a platform-support commitment, not a guarantee about when a particular motherboard will receive a BIOS update. Is an X870 board worth upgrading to from X670E?
Not on the chipset name alone. HotHardware noted that Ryzen 9000 processors can work on older X670 or similar AM5 boards, often after a BIOS update. A newer X870-family board may offer features such as Wi-Fi 7 or a different I/O and slot design, but whether those justify replacing an existing board depends on the features you need and the exact models involved. Verify CPU support and the required BIOS with the motherboard maker before upgrading.

For a new build, compare the board’s actual layout and equipment against your planned components. For an existing AM5 system, first identify a feature you cannot get from your current board; a new chipset designation by itself does not establish a meaningful performance or value improvement.

What to check before choosing a specific board
- Current price and availability: Confirm the listing is active in your country and check the retailer’s return terms. The 2024 figures above are not live quotes.
- PCIe and M.2 layout: Check slot generations, physical sizes, lane sharing, and whether installing an M.2 drive disables or reduces bandwidth on another slot.
- USB implementation: Count rear ports and front-panel headers, and confirm which are USB4. A chipset feature does not tell you how many ports a particular board provides.
- Networking: Verify Ethernet speed and wireless standards on the model page rather than inferring them from the X870 or X870E name.
- Power delivery and cooling: Compare VRM design, heatsinks, and cooling provisions with the processor and workload you plan to use.
- Memory and BIOS: Confirm supported memory configurations and the BIOS version needed for your CPU. Check the maker’s update history and support page.
- Warranty: Review the manufacturer’s warranty and the seller’s return policy for your region.
What the reported prices do—and do not—tell buyers
The $799 headline came from one reported listing for Gigabyte’s X870E AORUS XTREME AI TOP, not from a verified market-wide price survey. The $499 AORUS Master listing and the broader $219–$799 range were likewise reported historical figures. Because the captured report supplied no price for MSI’s MAG X870 Tomahawk Wi-Fi, it cannot support a direct price comparison between that board and Gigabyte’s models.
The report also does not establish current inventory, regional availability beyond the specific sightings, or which board offers better value. Those judgments require current local prices and exact model specifications. Compare the features you will use with the price you can actually buy at, rather than treating the top listing as representative of every X870 motherboard.
