For a laptop at a fixed desk, gigabit Ethernet is usually the more predictable connection. Wi-Fi is more convenient for moving around, and newer Wi-Fi hardware can advertise higher peak rates, but real-world wireless performance varies with signal, interference, distance, and network traffic. Neither connection guarantees a particular internet speed: your broadband plan and other bottlenecks matter too.

Is Ethernet faster than Wi-Fi on a laptop?

It depends on what “faster” means. Gigabit Ethernet provides a nominal wired link rate of 1 Gbit/s when the laptop interface or adapter, router or switch port, and cable path all support and negotiate gigabit. That figure is not a guarantee of 1 Gbit/s internet speed or application throughput. The IEEE Ethernet standards listing describes the standard, not the speed a particular internet connection will deliver.

Wi-Fi’s advertised rates are also not speed-test promises: they are theoretical physical-layer (PHY) capabilities. For example, Intel lists Wi-Fi 7 adapter maxima from 2.4 Gbps to 5.8 Gbps across different configurations. Intel’s estimate of 5.19 Gbps over the air assumes a 2×2 client, 320 MHz channels, 4096-QAM, Multi-Link Operation (MLO), and 90% efficiency. Those conditions are specific, and the estimate should not be read as a typical laptop result. Intel says Wi-Fi 7 can reach up to 2.4 times Wi-Fi 6/6E peak throughput when 320 MHz channels and 4K-QAM are available; that is a conditional peak comparison, not an expected everyday speed. See Intel’s Wi-Fi 7 capabilities.

Actual throughput depends on the entire path: laptop hardware, access point, connection quality, broadband service, and any other bottleneck. A direct speed test on the laptop, in the place and on the network where you use it, is the practical way to compare your own results.

Which connection is more reliable?

Ethernet avoids wireless-link variables, so it is generally the steadier choice at a fixed location. Wi-Fi performance can change with distance from the access point, walls and other obstructions, radio interference, and competing clients. A wired connection can still be limited by a faulty or slower cable, port, adapter, or internet service; “wired” does not remove those constraints.

Newer Wi-Fi features can improve wireless performance in suitable environments, but they require compatible hardware at both ends. Wi-Fi 7 includes MLO, which can use multiple bands, and Multi-RU puncturing. Intel says these capabilities can improve throughput, latency, and reliability under suitable conditions. A Wi-Fi 7 laptop connected to an access point that does not support the relevant features cannot rely on those benefits.

What Wi-Fi 7 trials show—and do not show

Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) trial results offer evidence that MLO can help in specific wireless setups, not a universal Ethernet-versus-Wi-Fi benchmark. In its February 26, 2026 residential Phase 2 trial, WBA used a commercially available tri-band Wi-Fi 7 access point and Intel BE200 client in a 4,500-square-foot single-family home. Under heavy 6 GHz co-channel interference, WBA reported that MLO doubled aggregate throughput compared with legacy single-link operation. The result applies to that trial setup; it does not establish that a particular laptop will double its speed. Details are in the WBA residential trial announcement.

Is wired Ethernet more reliable for gaming or video calls?

For gaming, video calls, or other latency-sensitive work at a fixed desk, Ethernet is usually the safer default when running a cable is practical: avoiding wireless interference and signal variation makes performance more predictable. Wi-Fi can still work well, especially near a capable access point with limited interference, but its consistency depends more on radio conditions and network load. A fast broadband plan does not by itself eliminate local Wi-Fi congestion or latency variation.

Do I need an Ethernet adapter for my laptop?

Only if the laptop lacks a built-in Ethernet port and you want to use a wired connection. Some thin laptops need a USB-C-to-Gigabit-Ethernet adapter. Check the laptop and adapter specifications, and confirm that the router or switch has a compatible port; a Cat6 cable is useful only as part of a path whose devices support the intended rate. The exact compatible adapter and negotiated link speed depend on the specific laptop, adapter, port, and cable path.

Will Wi-Fi 7 be faster than gigabit Ethernet?

Wi-Fi 7 can advertise peak PHY rates above 1 Gbit/s, but that does not establish that a laptop will deliver more than gigabit Ethernet in normal use. Real wireless throughput depends on client and access-point capabilities, channel width, signal quality, interference, and other traffic. Ethernet has a nominal 1 Gbit/s link when the full wired path negotiates gigabit, but internet performance may be lower if the broadband plan or another part of the path is the bottleneck. Consider Wi-Fi 7 when both the laptop and access point support it and the added wireless capability suits your needs; choose Ethernet for predictable performance at a fixed desk when cabling is practical.
