The right gift for a gamer depends first on what they play on, then on how they play and what they love. Check their platform and device generation before buying a controller, headset, storage accessory, or case. If you know their favorite game or series, a themed gift can be more personal; if you do not know their tastes, a gift card leaves the choice to them.
Start with the recipient, not the product
Before shopping, work through three questions. They help prevent the most common mismatch: a good gift that does not fit the recipient’s setup or interests.
- What platform do they use? Find out whether they play on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo, PC, or a handheld device. For accessories, check the exact model or generation as well as the brand.
- How do they play? Consider whether they mostly play alone, with friends on the same screen, while traveling, or away from a console at a table.
- Do they have a known fandom? A favorite series can guide a themed book, collectible, building set, or tabletop game. If you are unsure, choose something flexible rather than guessing at a specific title.
Platform-specific products are not automatically interchangeable. Sony’s official 2025 PlayStation gift guide and Xbox Wire’s 2025 Xbox gift guide feature products for their respective ecosystems. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility information for the exact item before purchasing.

For local multiplayer: an extra compatible controller
If the recipient often plays games with someone beside them, an additional controller can make it easier to join in. Sony’s 2025 guide specifically presents an extra DualSense controller as a way to bring another player into a session. Match the controller to the console and generation the recipient owns.

For a group that enjoys games away from a screen: a tabletop game
A tabletop game based on a familiar gaming world can suit someone who likes sharing game-related interests in person. GamesRadar’s 2026 gift guide includes tabletop games among its gaming-themed gift ideas. Choose one that fits the recipient’s interests and the group they are likely to play with.
Gifts for solo and portable play
For a player who values private audio: a headset
A gaming headset is a personal-use gift that may suit someone who plays alone, chats with teammates, or wants to hear game audio without using a room’s speakers. Confirm that the headset works with the recipient’s platform and check its connection requirements before buying.

For someone who plays away from a TV or desk: a portable device or accessory
Portable gifts make sense when travel or moving between rooms is part of the recipient’s routine. Sony describes PlayStation Portal as a remote player in its 2025 guide. Best Buy Canada’s October 30, 2025 guide also covers handheld gaming PCs, consoles, VR, and protective cases for different play settings. These categories serve different needs, so consider whether the recipient wants a separate handheld device, remote play, or simply protection for equipment they already carry.
A case is a smaller, practical option when you know the exact device that needs protection. Verify the model fit; a case intended for one handheld or console should not be assumed to fit another.

Gifts for storage or a gaming setup
For an Xbox Series X|S owner: compatible storage expansion
Xbox Wire’s 2025 guide names a Seagate 4TB Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S. It listed the card at $429.99 USD when the guide was published; that is a dated guide price, not a current quote. Check current pricing and confirm that the specific expansion card is compatible with the recipient’s console before buying.
For a PlayStation or Xbox player: choose accessories for the exact system
Platform guides can help narrow the category: Sony’s 2025 guide includes DualSense controllers and audio devices, while Xbox Wire’s includes controllers, mobile gaming controls, and audio products. These examples are not a universal ranking. Decide whether the recipient would benefit more from an accessory they will use regularly or from a gift that gives them more choice.

Gifts for fans of a particular game or series
When you know what the recipient likes, a gift does not have to be another game or piece of hardware. GamesRadar’s 2026 guide includes gaming cookbooks, building sets, licensed collectibles, tabletop games, and a retro handheld. Treat those as ideas for matching a known interest, not as recommendations that suit every gamer.
- Choose a cookbook if the recipient enjoys both the franchise and cooking.
- Choose a building set or collectible if they like displaying or assembling themed items.
- Choose a tabletop game if they enjoy playing with other people away from a console.
- Choose a retro handheld only if you know the recipient is interested in that kind of device and have checked what it supports.
When a gift card is the safer choice
A gift card is useful when you do not know the recipient’s platform, game preferences, or current setup well enough to choose a specific product. It lets them select the game or digital content they want, rather than leaving them with an incompatible accessory or a title they already own.
Sony’s official 2025 guide says PlayStation Plus cannot be gifted directly and suggests a PlayStation Store gift card as a way to contribute toward membership. Check Sony’s current terms and the gift card’s regional restrictions before purchasing, since service details can change.
