There is no single all-in fee or tax rate for buying U.S. stocks through GIFT City. Costs and tax treatment depend on what you buy: an NSE IX unsponsored depository receipt (UDR), an overseas-security position facilitated by a global-access platform, or units in an IFSC fund. Before comparing prices, identify the legal instrument and ownership chain; then check brokerage, foreign-exchange conversion, funding and withdrawal charges, liquidity, and the tax rules that apply to your residence and investment.
What are the GIFT City routes to U.S. stock exposure?
GIFT City is not one brokerage product. Different providers may offer different instruments, and similar-looking exposure can involve different rights, costs, and exit procedures.
NSE IX unsponsored depository receipts
NSE IX’s U.S.-stock offering is described as unsponsored UDRs. A UDR is a depository receipt linked to an underlying share; it is not automatically the same as owning that U.S. share directly in a U.S. brokerage account. Check the current underlying-stock list, the receipt’s terms, custody chain, trading hours, bid–ask spread, liquidity, settlement, and whether and how receipts can be converted or cancelled. HDFC GIFT City Bank’s FAQ described 50 UDR names when reviewed in 2026; availability can change.
Global-access brokerage platforms
Some GIFT City platforms facilitate access to overseas stocks and ETFs. Do not assume every platform gives the investor the same legal ownership or rights. Read the account and custody terms to establish what is held, by whom, and how a sale, transfer, or withdrawal works.
IFSC global-equity funds
With a fund, you own units in the fund, not the underlying stocks directly. The fund’s own expenses, subscription and redemption rules, holdings, and tax accounting matter. Review its current offer documents, strategy, benchmark, total expense ratio (TER), and treatment of distributions and redemptions.
What fees should you compare?
Brokerage is just one part of the cost. Provider pages reviewed in 2026 published the following example charges; they are not a universal GIFT City tariff or a complete cost comparison.

| Route or provider | Published charge or detail | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Anand Rathi GIFT City | 0.25% of trade value, with a USD 1 minimum per executed order, for U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. | This is brokerage, not an all-in cost. Check the current tariff and other applicable charges. |
| Geojit IFSC | 0.25% equity brokerage for U.S.-listed stocks and ETFs. | The published rate does not establish total funding, trading, custody, or withdrawal costs. |
| DSP IFSC global-equity fund | For the DSP product page reviewed, Class A (Regular) had a minimum initial subscription of USD 5,000 and above and TER up to 1.75%; Class B (Direct) had a minimum initial subscription of USD 5,000 and above and TER up to 1%. The page listed USD 500 for an additional subscription and said TER includes management, trusteeship, and operating expenses. | These are product- and class-specific disclosures, not brokerage rates or terms for other funds. Confirm the current offer documents and terms. |
For any route, ask for a current written tariff that separates trade commission from exchange and settlement charges, custody, bank remittance, conversion, withdrawal, and any other fees. A fee stated as a percentage may also have a minimum or other conditions, so check how it applies to your order size.

How much does GIFT City currency conversion cost?
There is no single verified INR/USD conversion rate or charge for every GIFT City route. The rate and any spread depend on the bank or provider, the amount, and when conversion occurs. An exchange’s permission to trade in a foreign currency does not tell you the customer’s conversion rate.

- Ask for the exact INR debit and USD credit for the amount you plan to fund.
- Ask whether a separate bank or remittance charge applies and whether conversion happens again when you withdraw proceeds.
- Compare the provider’s quoted customer rate with a same-time reference rate. Calculate the spread as the difference between the customer rate and reference rate, divided by the reference rate; list any fixed transfer charge separately.
- If money can remain in a foreign-currency account, check the account terms and permitted uses before relying on that option.
The Reserve Bank of India’s rules provide for certain permitted remittances to IFSC for financial services or products and foreign-jurisdiction transactions through IFSC foreign-currency accounts. That does not make every transfer or use permissible; eligibility depends on the transaction and applicable rules.
Conversion charges are separate from currency risk. If your spending and reporting base is INR and your investment is USD-denominated, INR/USD movements can raise or lower the INR value of your holdings and proceeds even if the U.S. share price does not change.
How does LRS and TCS apply to Indian residents?
The RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) permits authorised dealers to allow resident individuals to remit up to USD 250,000 per financial year (April–March) for permitted current- or capital-account transactions, or a combination of both. This is a regulatory ceiling for permitted remittances, not confirmation that every GIFT City product or investment purpose is eligible.

DSP’s product page reviewed in 2026 stated that 20% TCS applies to the amount exceeding INR 10 lakh remitted abroad in a financial year. That is DSP’s disclosure, not a universal statement of the current TCS rule for every remittance. Confirm the applicable category, threshold, and rate with current government or bank guidance for your transaction.

What Indian tax and reporting obligations could apply?
Tax treatment depends on your tax residence and the instrument you hold. Direct overseas securities, UDRs, and fund units should not be assumed to have identical tax character. Gains, dividends or distributions, holding period, foreign withholding, and the relevant tax year can all matter; a single capital-gains rate cannot accurately describe every route.
The Income Tax Department’s guidance for assessment year 2026–27 says a resident with a foreign asset or foreign-source income cannot file ITR-1. Its foreign-asset guidance describes Schedule FA reporting for residents. The applicable return and disclosures depend on residence classification, ownership or beneficial ownership, account authority, asset structure, and the instructions for the relevant filing year. Check the current return forms and obtain qualified tax advice for your circumstances.
Best Value
DSP’s product page also stated fund-level rates of 14.95% for long-term capital gains after a holding period of more than 24 months, 42.744% for short-term gains at 24 months or less, and 35.88% for dividend or income from units. Those figures describe that fund’s disclosures and tax computation, not a general investor-level rate for all GIFT City investments. The page said its published NAV was after applicable taxes and that indexation had been discontinued from 23 July 2024; verify current scheme documents and law before relying on those statements.
Could U.S. tax or withholding apply?
U.S. tax treatment depends on the investor’s status and the actual instrument and ownership chain. The IRS’s 2025 Publication 519 says U.S.-source dividends paid to nonresident aliens are generally subject to 30% tax or a lower treaty rate. It also says capital gains generally are not taxable when a nonresident alien’s U.S. presence is under 183 days, subject to exceptions. These are broad rules; they do not establish the treatment of every UDR, IFSC fund, or custody arrangement. A GIFT City account alone does not prove that U.S. withholding or other U.S. tax considerations do not apply.
Are IFSC exchange transactions exempt from STT and stamp duty?
HDFC GIFT City Bank’s FAQ says transactions on IFSC exchanges are exempt from securities transaction tax (STT) and stamp duty. Treat that as a statement about the exchange transactions covered by the FAQ, not as an exemption from every levy or as a rule for unrelated platform or fund products. Confirm present applicability and check whether other exchange or settlement charges apply.
Quick Recap
How to compare routes before investing
- Identify the instrument: establish whether you will hold a UDR, an overseas-security position through a platform, or fund units, and read the legal and custody documents.
- Compare the full cost: request a written schedule for brokerage, minimum order charges, exchange and settlement costs, custody, remittance, FX spread, and withdrawals.
- Check trading and exit mechanics: review the available securities, trading hours, liquidity and bid–ask spreads, settlement, and the exact process to sell, redeem, transfer, or cancel the holding.
- Check funding eligibility and tax: confirm that the remittance purpose is permitted under the rules that apply to you, then determine Indian reporting and tax treatment and any U.S. withholding based on your status and instrument.
