Both routes can give Indian residents access to foreign investments, but they are not interchangeable account types. A GIFT City account involves an entity and account arrangement in India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC); an Indian broker’s international product may instead connect you to a separate overseas broker. The provider, contract, custody, available markets, fees and funding process matter more than the label. Both routes use the same RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) limit for resident individuals: up to USD 250,000 per financial year, subject to the scheme’s rules.

How the two routes differ

“GIFT City investing” refers to investing through a provider operating in the IFSC at GIFT City, Gujarat. It does not by itself tell you which legal entity contracts with you, where your securities are held or what protections apply. Those details depend on the provider and its account documents.

An Indian broker’s international-investing account is a service offered through an Indian-facing platform. The underlying account may be with an overseas broker or another partner. For example, ICICI Direct says its Global Investment account is opened with Interactive Brokers LLC, which it identifies as the executing and clearing broker and global custodian. That is a description of this particular service, not a rule for every Indian broker.

IFSCA rules permit resident individuals to open and maintain a foreign-currency account with an IFSC Banking Unit for transactions connected with permissible LRS transactions. Operational directions for these accounts were amended in an IFSCA entry dated June 23, 2025, so check the current direction and the provider’s terms rather than relying only on the original 2021 rule.

Side-by-side comparison

What to compare GIFT City / IFSC provider Indian broker’s international account
Account and regulatory structure IFSCA rules allow a resident individual to maintain a foreign-currency account with an IFSC Banking Unit for eligible LRS transactions. The provider’s precise role, contracting entity and client rights depend on its documents. The platform may route the account through an overseas broker. ICICI Direct, for instance, identifies Interactive Brokers LLC as the entity with which its Global Investment account is opened.
Markets and products INDmoney’s cited service page advertises US stocks and global ETFs. This does not establish access to every exchange or security through other IFSC providers. ICICI Direct’s FAQ lists US, UK, Germany, Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong securities. INDmoney and ICICI Direct describe different offerings; confirm eligible instruments and order features for the account you are considering.
Funding Resident-individual remittances remain subject to LRS. An IFSC account does not create an additional annual allowance. The same LRS framework applies. The broker’s remittance workflow, participating bank and bank charges may differ from an IFSC provider’s process.
Published pricing example INDmoney advertises brokerage of 0.25%, subject to a ceiling, and no annual maintenance or account fee. These are provider statements; the ceiling amount and current terms should be checked in its live tariff. ICICI Direct publishes transaction-charge details. The available information does not establish a complete, comparable all-in cost for this route.
Eligibility Check the named provider’s current onboarding criteria, residency rules and service availability. ICICI Direct says residents, NRIs and certain corporates can use its facility, subject to its stated conditions. Do not assume the same eligibility applies to other brokers.
Tax, custody and investor protection These depend on the actual arrangement and applicable law. The account’s location alone does not settle tax treatment or protection in a provider or custodian failure. Confirm the overseas relationship, custody terms and applicable protections in the current agreement. A broker’s or partner’s regulatory status alone does not establish the full remedy available to you.

How the LRS limit applies

The Reserve Bank of India says a resident individual may remit up to USD 250,000 in a financial year under LRS. The ceiling is shared across relevant LRS remittances; it is not a separate allowance for each platform or account. The scheme also includes specified current-account remittances, alongside permitted capital-account uses, so account for your other relevant remittances when planning an investment transfer.

Before funding either route, ask the provider and your bank how the transfer will be classified, what documentation they require and how they report or track the remittance. The existence of an IFSC foreign-currency account does not change the RBI ceiling.

Compare the total cost, not just brokerage

A headline brokerage rate is only one line in the cost of investing abroad. The INDmoney figures above are advertised provider terms, not a universal IFSC price or a complete cost estimate. For either route, obtain the current tariff and identify every charge that can apply:

  • Brokerage, including any minimum charge, cap or per-order fee.
  • Currency conversion rate and any foreign-exchange spread.
  • Bank transfer, remittance or intermediary-bank charges.
  • Account, custody or other recurring charges, if any.
  • Withdrawal or transfer-out charges.
  • Applicable transaction, regulatory or market charges.

Ask for a worked estimate for the amount you intend to remit, buy, sell and withdraw. Compare the same transaction path and currency assumptions across providers; otherwise a lower headline rate may not mean a lower total cost.

What to verify before opening an account

Use the provider’s current account agreement, fee schedule and regulator records—not the marketing label—to answer these questions:

  1. Eligibility: Does the service accept your residency and investor category, and are the relevant markets available to you?
  2. Regulated and contracting entities: Which legal entity opens the account, which regulator authorises it for the relevant activity, and which entity is responsible for execution?
  3. Ownership and custody: How are you recorded as the beneficial owner? Who holds the assets, and what do the documents say happens if the platform, broker or custodian fails?
  4. Investment access: Which exchanges, securities, funds and order types are supported? Do not infer broad international access from the word “global.”
  5. Funding and withdrawals: What bank and remittance steps apply, which currencies are supported, what charges can arise, and how are withdrawals handled?
  6. Tax and reporting: What Indian tax, disclosure and reporting duties apply to your situation, and are there relevant foreign obligations? Get current, qualified advice where needed; these cannot be determined from the account’s location alone.

Which route should you choose?

Choose based on the specific provider and contract, not on a blanket assumption that GIFT City or an Indian broker account is cheaper, safer or more tax-efficient. An IFSC account may suit someone who wants to use an IFSC provider’s particular account and funding arrangement; a broker’s international service may suit someone who values that service’s stated markets or existing platform workflow. Either can be appropriate only if its eligibility, custody, costs, access and reporting obligations fit your needs.

For example, the cited provider pages describe different access: INDmoney advertises US stocks and global ETFs, while ICICI Direct lists six markets. Neither description establishes that one offers every product or feature you need. Compare the precise instruments and terms available to you before deciding.
