For a short decorative loop, use a muted MP4 or WebM video when reducing delivery cost is the priority. Choose animated WebP when the motion needs to behave like an image, especially if it needs transparency or simple embedding. AVIF can be smaller still for supported browsers, but should have a fallback. There is no universal winner: compare the actual file size, visual quality, playback needs, and browser coverage of the media you plan to ship.

Which GIF alternative should you use?

Start with how the animation will be used, not with a claim that one format is always best.

  • Choose MP4 or WebM for a short, silent loop when delivery efficiency matters more than image-like behavior. Cloudflare recommends video formats such as MP4 and WebM for animations, and web.dev generally advises using video instead of animated-image formats for this kind of media.
  • Choose animated WebP when you need an animation embedded as an image, particularly when it needs transparency. It supports lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, and animation, with native support in major browsers.
  • Consider animated AVIF when compression is the priority and your delivery path can provide a fallback for browsers that do not support it.
  • Choose APNG when preserving exact pixels in an animated image matters more than minimizing transfer size.

GIF is not automatically wrong for every tiny, low-resolution animation, but it is usually a poor choice for large or high-resolution motion. Video and newer image formats can reduce transfer and decoding costs; the result depends on dimensions, frame rate, encoder settings, device, and delivery path.

How the alternatives compare

Format Best fit Advantages Trade-offs
Animated WebP Image-like loops, including animations with transparency Supports lossy and lossless animation and alpha transparency; often smaller than GIF or APNG for comparable content; supported by major browsers. Some straight-line decoding can use more CPU than GIF. Retain a fallback for older clients.
Animated AVIF Maximum compression when the audience supports it Supports animation, transparency, and high color depth, with strong compression. Its support profile is newer than WebP’s, and it does not support progressive rendering. Provide a WebP or JPEG/PNG fallback.
APNG Lossless animated graphics where exact pixels matter Lossless animation and broad browser support. Usually less efficient than WebP or AVIF for equivalent animation.
MP4 Short looping clips and GIF replacements Efficient video compression and hardware-accelerated playback paths; recommended for GIF-like motion by Apple and Cloudflare. Use a muted file without an audio track when sound is unnecessary. Account for autoplay behavior and provide a poster or fallback.
WebM Open video delivery where target browsers support it Efficient VP8/VP9 video in an HTML video element. Pair it with MP4 when broader compatibility is needed, and test codec support for your audience.

Published figures offer context, not a guaranteed saving for a particular animation. Google for Developers’ WebP FAQ, accessed in 2026, says lossless WebP images are 26% smaller than PNGs; its WebP documentation says lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEGs at equivalent SSIM quality. Those comparisons do not establish how a particular animated file will fare.

HTTP Archive’s 2025 Web Almanac reported these shares among LCP image formats: JPG 57%, PNG 26%, WebP 11%, MP4 2%, SVG 2%, GIF 1%, and AVIF 1%. This describes field usage, not relative performance or a target for your own site.

How to choose for a real asset

  1. Set the visual and functional requirements. Decide whether the animation needs transparency, lossless pixels, a poster frame, or video playback controls.
  2. Make representative encodes. Use the dimensions and quality settings you would actually publish; compare byte size and visual quality rather than assuming a format’s general advantage applies to your file.
  3. Check playback and decoding on target devices. Transfer size is only part of performance. Frame rate, decode cost, hardware, and how the browser receives the file also matter.
  4. Choose the least complex option that meets the requirements. For an image-like animation, WebP is a practical default. Use AVIF when its measured benefit justifies fallback handling; use video when efficient looping motion is the main goal.

How to provide image-format fallbacks

Use a <picture> element to offer AVIF first, WebP next, and a conventional image such as PNG or JPEG as the fallback. The browser selects a supported source; retaining a fallback matters because newer formats have less comprehensive support. Use a real fallback image that makes sense if animation is unavailable.

<picture>
  <source srcset="loop.avif" type="image/avif">
  <source srcset="loop.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="loop.png" width="640" height="360" alt="A description of the animation">
</picture>

Use an appropriate still image in the final <img> if the animation’s movement is not essential to understanding the page. For animation that must preserve exact pixels, APNG is another option, but it may cost more bytes than WebP or AVIF.

How to replace a GIF with video

For a decorative loop, use a video element with autoplay, muted playback, looping, and inline playback. Remove the audio track if the clip does not need sound. Offer WebM and MP4 sources when appropriate; source order affects which playable format the browser selects, so test the order and codecs against the browsers you support.

<video autoplay muted loop playsinline width="640" height="360" poster="loop-poster.jpg">
  <source src="loop.webm" type="video/webm">
  <source src="loop.mp4" type="video/mp4">
  <img src="loop-poster.jpg" width="640" height="360" alt="A description of the clip">
</video>

The poster gives viewers a still before playback; the nested image provides fallback content where the video element is unsupported. If the motion conveys information, ensure the text alternative communicates what viewers need to know.

Delivery details that still matter

  • Reserve layout space. Set width and height or an aspect ratio so the media does not cause a layout shift as it loads.
  • Defer offscreen media. Lazy-load media below the fold and avoid downloading an animation until it is near the viewport.
  • Use negotiated delivery where practical. An image CDN or server-side Accept-header negotiation can select a suitable variant for a browser, but retain a deterministic fallback so the page still works when a preferred format is unavailable.
  • Keep the delivery path testable. Compare the actual variants served to representative browsers and devices; format choice alone does not tell you the transfer or decode cost users will experience.
