GhostPairing is a social-engineering attack that tricks someone into linking an attacker-controlled device to their WhatsApp account. The cited CERT-In advisory describes misuse of WhatsApp’s device-linking feature—not a demonstrated break of WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption. If your account still works, check Linked devices and log out anything unfamiliar. If your number has been registered elsewhere and you lose access, re-register it using the code WhatsApp sends you.

What GhostPairing does—and what it does not establish

CERT-In describes GhostPairing as an abuse of WhatsApp device linking through social engineering. A person is led to believe they are viewing content or verifying something, but the steps they complete authorize a new device or endpoint. If that endpoint belongs to an attacker, the attacker may then access the account through the linked session and could impersonate the account owner.

That is different from breaking encryption. WhatsApp’s multi-device design allows linked sessions to operate independently while retaining end-to-end encryption, according to Meta’s engineering explanation. The CERT-In advisory does not describe a cryptographic break of WhatsApp’s encryption. The practical danger is that a person has been persuaded to approve an additional endpoint.

Pairing flows can be legitimate, including linking by QR code or phone number. Be wary of an unexpected pairing-code request, unfamiliar QR flow, or prompt to continue linking a device when you are not setting up a device of your own. These are warning signs, not a definitive checklist of every GhostPairing attempt.

Check whether an unfamiliar device is linked

  1. Open WhatsApp on your primary phone.
  2. Open Linked devices. The exact menu location and labels can vary with the operating system and app version.
  3. Review the listed devices. If you do not recognize an entry, select it and tap Log out.
  4. Enable or review two-step verification in WhatsApp’s account security settings, and never share your registration code.

WhatsApp recommends checking linked devices regularly. The device list can help you remove an unfamiliar session, but WhatsApp says it cannot tell you who accessed the account or the time and location of access.

Choose the right response for your situation

What is happening What to do
Your account still works, but a linked device looks unfamiliar Use Linked devices on your primary phone to log out that device. Then review two-step verification and your account security settings.
Your number appears to have been registered elsewhere, or you cannot access the account Use WhatsApp’s recovery flow to re-register your number with the six-digit code received by SMS or phone call. After regaining access, review linked devices and tell contacts if impersonation may have occurred.

These steps address different problems: logging out an unfamiliar linked session is not the same as recovering a number that has been registered on another device. Two-step verification and keeping your registration code private help protect registration and recovery; they do not remove an already-authorized linked session.

Recover a WhatsApp account when access is lost

  1. On WhatsApp, choose Log back in or Continue, enter your phone number, and request the verification code.
  2. Enter the six-digit code delivered by SMS or phone call. WhatsApp says re-registering the number logs other devices out.
  3. If WhatsApp asks for a two-step verification PIN you do not know, follow the recovery process shown in WhatsApp. Recovery may not be immediate.
  4. Once you can use the account, review Linked devices and log out any device you do not recognize.
  5. If someone may have used your account to impersonate you, contact family and friends through another channel so they can treat unexpected messages cautiously.

WhatsApp says it cannot identify who accessed an account or provide the time and location of access. Do not expect the linked-device screen to identify an attacker.

Protect your account from future pairing tricks

  • Only link a device when you are setting up a device you intend to use.
  • Do not enter or share a WhatsApp registration code at another person’s request, even if they claim to be a friend or support representative.
  • Turn on two-step verification and keep its PIN private.
  • Check Linked devices regularly and remove sessions you do not recognize.
  • Treat unexpected requests to scan a QR code or approve device linking as suspicious until you have independently confirmed why they are needed.

What is known about the campaign

CERT-In’s advisory explains the device-linking and social-engineering mechanism, but the cited sources do not establish a reliable GhostPairing victim count or prevalence rate. The advisory therefore supports practical precautions, not a claim about how widespread the campaign is. WhatsApp’s security guidance also does not promise forensic identification of an attacker.
