Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition is the fullest way to enter Atsu’s story: it combines the PS5 campaign with the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, the Most Wanted survival mode, Legends co-op, and previously released bonus content. That breadth makes it the stronger proposition for newcomers. For owners who have already finished the campaign, the digital-only upgrade is a narrower decision: its value depends on how much the new story and repeatable modes appeal to you, and whether you already own Digital Deluxe content.
What’s included in Ghost of Yōtei Complete Edition?
Sony describes the Complete Edition as a PS5 package containing the base game and its additional modes and content. Its main additions are distinct enough to consider separately:

- Echoes of Sekigahara: a story expansion that revisits Atsu’s past, opens a new area of Ezo, explores material connected to the Battle of Sekigahara, and adds a weapon type.
- Most Wanted: a survival mode built around waves of enemies and boss encounters, with weapons, cosmetics, and playable characters to unlock.
- Legends: online co-op with Survival, Story, and Incursion modes.
- Digital Deluxe content and Complete Edition extras: the package includes content previously offered in the Digital Deluxe Edition and the Charm of Hokkyokusei. Sony also lists Watanabe Mode tracks, photo-mode stamps, New Game+ cosmetics, and new trophies for Echoes and Most Wanted.
The expansion is the package’s main story draw; Most Wanted and Legends are better reasons to keep returning after the campaign. Sony’s official game page describes the base game as an action adventure centered on Atsu, with melee and ranged combat, an expanding weapon arsenal, and exploration on foot or horseback around Mount Yōtei.

As a package, it earns the “worthy return” part of its pitch more convincingly than the “savage” one: it adds a new chapter and repeatable modes without being presented as a fundamental overhaul of the underlying game. Whether that is enough depends on what you wanted from the original. A new setting and more weapon options give the combat and exploration fresh material, while the survival and co-op modes offer a different rhythm from the story campaign.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
The available critical perspectives are useful, but they cover different versions. GamesRadar’s 2025 review of the original game praised Ezo’s setting and the weapon-switching combat, while its reviewer objected to some repetitive combat padding, drawn-out climbing, and moments when exploration felt over-directed. Those are that reviewer’s observations about the base game, not a verdict on the new modes. MeriStation’s October 2, 2026 review of the Complete Edition found that Echoes of Sekigahara adds context in a way that fits Atsu’s existing story, but said the package does not radically transform the game. That outlet also judged it more appealing to newcomers than to players who had already completed the campaign.
The story’s emotional aim is also worth distinguishing from its effect. Sucker Punch studio head Brian Fleming described the game as “a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance, told through the eyes of a new hero set in the breathtaking edge of Japan.” That is the studio’s stated intent, not a guarantee that every player will respond to Atsu’s journey in the same way.
Rank #2
- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
Should newcomers buy the Complete Edition?
If you do not own the base game and want both the campaign and its current set of major additions, the Complete Edition is the straightforward option. You get the original journey alongside the expansion, co-op, and survival mode rather than having to choose among separate pieces later. Its appeal is strongest if you expect to play beyond the main story or want the complete narrative package from the start.
It is a less compelling fit if you only want a single campaign and have little interest in online co-op or replayable survival. In that case, compare the local price and edition contents with the base-game options available in your market; the supplied official announcement does not establish a universal current price.

- Battle against over 50 players simultaneously in a massive multiplayer playground.
- Compete in an all-out mass start race—collide, grind, and fight your way to the finish
- Customize your character to show off your style to your friends or show up the competition.
- Bike, ski, snowboard, or wingsuit through a seamless open world in Career mode or multiplayer events.
- Go wild on the heights of iconic US national parks like Yosemite, Zion, and Bryce Canyon.
Should existing owners buy the upgrade?
Sony offers existing owners a digital-only Complete Edition Upgrade. It is aimed at players who already have the game and want the Complete Edition additions; it is not a route to a disc copy. Before paying, check which bonus content you already own, especially Digital Deluxe content, and compare your local upgrade price with what you would actually play.
- Lean toward the upgrade if Echoes of Sekigahara’s new story and area are enough to bring you back, or if you expect to spend time in Most Wanted or Legends.
- Think twice if you finished the campaign and are mainly curious whether the base game has changed. MeriStation’s Complete Edition review says it does not radically transform the experience.
- Do not buy it just for patch v2.0: Sony says features such as Beauty of Yōtei and quality-of-life improvements arrive for all owners, not only Complete Edition buyers.
The key distinction is between paid package content and updates made available to owners generally. Sony’s Complete Edition announcement identifies the included paid additions and the broader patch features; check its regional dates and your local store listing before deciding.

Is there a physical disc version?
Yes. Sony’s announcement says the full Complete Edition is available in disc and digital formats in the territories covered by that announcement. It also notes that release and patch timing varies: October 1, 2026 globally and October 2 in some territories for patch v2.0 and associated additions; the post says Echoes and Most Wanted arrive with a patch on October 2 for the covered release. Those dates should not be assumed to apply identically in every market. Confirm the format, edition, release date, and stock with the local PlayStation Store or retailer.
The upgrade for existing owners is digital only. Downloads require an internet connection and PlayStation account, and Legends online multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus, according to Sony’s announcement.
Best Value
- Beyond war, ancient beauty endures: Roam vast countryside and expansive terrain to encounter rich characters, discover ancient landmarks and uncover the hidden beauty of Tsushima.
- The rise of the Ghost: Seek support from old friends and new unlikely allies to reclaim Tsushima.
- Mud, Blood and steel: challenge opponents with your katana for an immersive Samurai combat experience.
- Become legends together: play with friends or via online matchmaking in a series of two-player story missions or four-player wave-based survival missions in the legends online co-op
- A whole new island to explore: Travel to Iki Island to investigate rumors of a Mongol presence in a brand-new story with deeply personal stakes.
How to choose between the full edition and upgrade
| What to compare | Newcomer considering the full edition | Existing owner considering the upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Base game | Included in the Complete Edition. | Already owned; the upgrade is digital only. |
| Digital Deluxe content | Included as part of the package. | Check what you already own before paying for the upgrade. |
| New story | Echoes of Sekigahara adds Atsu’s past, a new area, Sekigahara material, and a weapon type. | Consider whether that additional story is enough to return to the game. |
| Repeatable play | Most Wanted survival and Legends co-op expand the package beyond the campaign. | Worth weighing if waves, boss encounters, unlocks, or online co-op are the main draw. |
| Format and price | Disc and digital versions are announced for covered territories; check local availability and price. | Upgrade is digital only; compare the local upgrade price with content you will use. |
Patch timing is another practical check: Sony’s announcement gives different dates for some territories. It also identifies Beauty of Yōtei and quality-of-life features as updates for all owners, so those alone are not a reason to pay for the Complete Edition.
PS5 features and optional themed hardware
Sony lists DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, as well as PS5 Pro features including PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution and advanced ray tracing. These are platform features, not extra content exclusive to the Complete Edition. Sony also announced limited-edition Ghost of Yōtei PS5 console bundles and DualSense controllers as themed accessories. Its October 2025 U.S. launch announcement listed historical MSRPs of $599.99 for the console bundle and $84.99 for the controller; those figures are not current price or availability guarantees, and neither accessory is required to play.
