Getty Images is worth considering when you need premium creative or editorial content with clearly documented rights, professional support, and reliable coverage. It is not a free photo library: every download is a paid licence, and the licence—not the download itself—determines where, how long, and in what form you may use the file. For occasional, low-risk projects, a cheaper stock service may be better value. For commercial campaigns, publishing, news, sport, entertainment, or assignments where rights certainty matters, Getty can be a strong fit if you select the correct licence.
What Getty Images sells
Getty Images is a premium licensing service for photographs, illustrations, vectors, video and audio. You are licensing the right to use an asset under stated conditions, not purchasing the copyright or receiving unrestricted ownership.
Getty’s Content Licence Agreement says, “Royalty-free does not mean there is no cost for the licence.” Its purchasing FAQ puts the transaction plainly: “When you download a photo, illustration, vector, video or audio file on Getty Images, you’re actually buying a licence that gives you rights to use it in your projects.”
The company positions the service toward corporate, agency and media customers, with premium creative and editorial content, support and customized rights and protections. That positioning explains the price level, but it is not independent proof that Getty is always better value than a competitor.

Getty licensing models explained
Check the designation shown for the individual asset and read the applicable agreement before publishing. A licence model does not automatically permit every possible use.
| Model | What it generally means | What determines scope or price |
|---|---|---|
| Royalty-free (RF) | A one-time licence fee generally permits worldwide, unlimited, perpetual reuse under the agreement. “Royalty-free” means no additional royalties for those permitted reuses; it does not mean free access. | Getty says the fee is based on file size. Restrictions in the agreement still apply. |
| Rights-managed (RM) | Use is defined for the particular project rather than being broadly reusable by default. | Factors include file size, placement, duration and geographic distribution. Confirm the exact media, audience, territory and term. |
| Rights-ready (RR) | Use is licensed for specified conditions, commonly for video clips and other defined placements. | Scope and price depend on the selected use details. Do not assume an RR clip has RF-style perpetual reuse. |
Getty states that by downloading content you accept its agreement. Using a file without a licence, or outside the permitted scope, can expose the user to copyright-infringement claims.
Can you use Getty editorial photos commercially?
Not automatically. Editorial images are intended to report or illustrate newsworthy events, people and culture, and their permitted uses are narrower than those for many creative images. Getty’s plan information specifically says editorial images licensed through prepaid packs cannot be used for commercial uses or print covers.
Recommended Free Tools
That restriction means you should not use an editorial pack image in an advertisement, product packaging, marketing campaign, merchandise, promotional brochure or a print cover unless the licence expressly allows that use. A separate individual licence may have different terms, but you must verify the asset’s designation and the written licence for your project rather than infer permission from the image page alone.
Rank #3
For a commercial assignment, ask Getty or your account representative to confirm:
- whether the file is editorial or creative;
- the permitted media, placement and audience;
- territory and duration;
- whether cropping, retouching, overlays or other modifications are allowed;
- model, property, trademark and publicity-rights limitations; and
- whether the purchase channel imposes extra restrictions.
Ways to buy Getty content
Individual purchases
You can license a single asset for a specific project. This is usually the clearest route when you need one image or when the use is unusual and must be negotiated precisely. The total cost depends on the licence type and selected use details.
Rank #4
Prepaid packs
Packs combine credits for RF creative photos, illustrations, vectors, royalty-free video and most editorial images, according to Getty’s UK plan information. They can suit recurring but moderate demand, yet the editorial restriction is material: pack-licensed editorial images cannot be used for commercial uses or print covers.
Annual Premium Access
Annual Premium Access is aimed at higher-volume customers who need ongoing access and a broader purchasing arrangement. The practical value depends on your negotiated scope, download needs, renewal terms and the rights attached to each asset.

Individual subscriptions launched in 2026
On July 9, 2026, Getty announced single-seat Creative and Editorial image subscriptions for individual professionals. The announcement describes AI-free creative imagery and editorial coverage spanning news, sport, entertainment and Getty’s archive. The available announcement does not establish exact prices, download allowances, renewal conditions or complete rights terms, so check the current offer before relying on it for a budget or production plan.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How to decide whether Getty is worth it
Getty is a good fit when
- your brief requires hard-to-find editorial, sport, entertainment or breaking-news coverage;
- the image will appear in a high-value campaign, publication or client deliverable where rights mistakes are costly;
- you need a formal licence trail for legal, procurement or brand-governance review;
- your team buys content regularly enough to justify packs, Premium Access or a negotiated account; or
- you need support and rights protections associated with a professional licensing provider.
A cheaper service may be better when
- you need generic web, blog or presentation imagery with little editorial urgency;
- you buy only a few files per year;
- your project cannot support Getty’s fee for the required size or usage scope; or
- you need an unrestricted commercial use that a particular editorial asset or pack explicitly excludes.
Make the comparison against the assignment, not against a headline price. A low-cost file that cannot legally cover your audience, territory, term or placement is not cheaper in practice.
A safe Getty buying workflow
- Classify the assignment. Decide whether the project is commercial, editorial, internal, promotional, educational or personal, and list every intended channel.
- Check the asset label. Identify whether the file is RF, RM or RR and whether it is marked editorial or creative.
- Define the rights you need. Record media, placement, audience, territory, duration, size, print run, modifications and any cover or advertising use.
- Choose the purchase route. Compare an individual licence, pack, annual Premium Access or an available 2026 individual subscription. Do not choose a pack if its editorial restrictions conflict with the assignment.
- Read and retain the licence. Save the invoice, licence text, asset ID and download date with the project files. Getty says the downloaded content is governed by the agreement you accept.
- Obtain written clarification for edge cases. Ask Getty to confirm any use involving products, endorsements, political messaging, sensitive subjects, print covers, merchandise, paid advertising or substantial alterations.
Important 2026 pricing and availability caveats
Getty pricing and plan availability vary by region and can change. The plan information used for the pack description is from Getty’s UK site and should not be treated as a US price or a universal offer. Check your regional checkout or obtain a current sales quote, and record the currency, date, file allowance, renewal conditions and licence scope.

Do not budget from an announcement headline alone.
Verdict
Getty Images is a rights-focused premium service, not a bargain image shop. It earns its place when content quality, timeliness, catalogue depth and licence certainty matter more than the lowest per-file price. The decisive question is whether the selected asset and purchase channel cover your actual use. RF can provide broad reuse after a paid fee, while RM and RR require project-specific care; editorial material—especially through packs—cannot simply be repurposed for commercial work. If you document the intended use first and verify the licence before downloading, Getty can be a defensible choice for professional projects.
