Guess can turn a family reunion into a quick, personal group game: one person holds a phone to their forehead while everyone else gives clues about the word on screen. WhistleOut reviewer Jessica Santero says the app lets players create custom categories, making it possible to build a round around family nicknames or the pets relatives have owned. The app details below reflect her review, updated September 23, 2026; current store listings and features have not been independently verified.
How Guess works
In the format described by WhistleOut, a player holds the phone forehead-high with the displayed word facing the group. The other players give spoken clues, and the person holding the phone tries to identify the word. It is designed for a room where people can hear and respond to one another, so it suits a reunion table or living room better than a game everyone plays silently on their own screen.
Santero calls Guess a phone-based version of Heads Up. She reports that the app is free and available for iOS and Android, but those are review-time claims rather than a live check of current app-store availability. Check the relevant store before planning around a download.

Make a round feel like your family
The review’s most reunion-friendly suggestion is to create a category from scratch. Family nicknames and the names of pets the family has owned are examples Santero gives. These prompts reward shared memories, and relatives of different ages can often contribute clues even if they do not know the same trivia.
#1 Best Overall
- A CHILDREN'S FAVORITE: There's a mystery person on your opponent's card. Can you find the matching face in the crowd. Guess Who is a light game of deduction best suited for young kids
- BELOVED CLASSIC: This is the original mystery face game from the 1980's featuring all the same cast of characters
- THE SETUP: Both players set up their 24 character cards in their plastic game units. Each player then picks a mystery face card and the fun begins
- THE PLAY: Ask the right questions to eliminate the wrong faces. Is the person wearing a hat? Do they have a beard? Once you've got it narrowed down take a guess and see if you can solve the mystery
- SKILLS: Playing Guess Who will improve your child's memory, recognition, deduction, and logic
For a category relatives can help build before the gathering, collect short, recognizable entries that are easy to clue aloud. Shared vacations, familiar recipes, and memorable family sayings are possible ideas for a host to add; they are editorial suggestions, not examples confirmed in the review. Avoid entries that only one person can reasonably know if the goal is to include the whole group.
Choose a ready-made category or customize the rules
According to Santero’s review, Guess includes premade categories for hosts who want to start quickly, as well as the option to create custom categories. The review also says players can adjust teams, time, number of guesses, and mistakes. Those settings give a host room to shape a round around the group, although the review does not specify exact setting ranges or how each setting is presented in the current app.

- Set the round. Decide on teams and adjust time, guesses, or mistakes based on the group’s appetite for a quick or more forgiving game.
- Pass the phone. Have one person hold it forehead-high while the rest of the players give clues; rotate the guesser so more relatives get a turn.
These steps use the controls and format described in the review; exact menu labels and current app behavior may differ.

Use a no-phone version if guests prefer it
Some guests may not want to install or use an app. EXPO’s family game-night guide describes a related secret-word clue game: write the word on a board where two players cannot see it, then have the rest of the family offer clues. The guide also suggests an erasable board for tracking team standings.

This is not the same setup as the phone game. Guess, as described by WhistleOut, centers on one person holding a phone and guessing from spoken clues; EXPO’s activity starts with two players unable to see a word written on a board. A small whiteboard and dry-erase markers can support the offline version and keep score, while the app version needs a phone.

WhistleOut’s Jessica Santero updated her review on September 23, 2026, and gave the app 5/5. That score is her review judgment, not an independently measured statistic. She writes, “WOW. That’s all I can say about this app. Guess makes it so easy and you don’t need to think about anything.” Treat that as her personal assessment rather than a guarantee that every family will find the app effortless.
