The Get Smart shoe phone is Maxwell Smart’s signature fictional telephone: CONTROL agent Smart, played by Don Adams, takes calls through a phone concealed in his shoe. Real production props were built to sell the gag on screen, but they were entertainment props—not evidence of a working spy telephone. The original series ran for 138 episodes from 1965 to 1970.
What is the Get Smart shoe phone?
It is a recurring gadget from Get Smart, the spy-spoof sitcom, and is closely associated with Maxwell Smart. The joke turns an ordinary shoe into a place for a secret agent’s telephone to ring, pairing espionage-style concealment with an everyday object.

The Television Academy records 138 episodes. NBC broadcast the series from September 1965 through September 1969, and CBS carried it from September 1969 through September 1970. The Television Academy’s series archive also gathers interviews about the show, including conversations concerning its satire and gadgets.
Was the shoe phone real?
The shoe phone was fictional as a telephone used by an agent, but the on-screen object was a physical prop. A 2000 WIRED account of the prop describes the first shoe phone used by Don Adams as a loafer with listening equipment in its heel and a microphone revealed in the toe. Those details describe a screen prop, not an operational spy device.

WIRED reported that the prop was displayed at CIA headquarters as part of an exhibition that was not open to the public. The Comisar Collection also identifies Maxwell Smart’s shoe phone among its television artifacts; see The Comisar Collection.
Can you buy a Get Smart shoe phone?
There is documented collector interest in original production props, but that does not establish that one is currently for sale. Heritage Auctions recorded a sale of an original shoe phone prop for $35,000 on October 24, 2025. That figure is one transaction, not a typical valuation or a current asking price. Heritage Auctions’ lot 89125 provides the sale record and prop description.

Why does the shoe phone stand out?
The gag depends on a sharp contrast: a spy’s phone is hidden in the least high-tech-looking place imaginable. The shoe remains recognizable as an ordinary object even when the story treats it as secret-agent equipment. That visual premise also explains why the prop matters to television memorabilia collectors, while keeping the distinction clear between a memorable fictional device and a functional telephone.
