ChatGPT ads may appear for eligible Free and Go users in supported markets. They are labeled and placed separately from answers; OpenAI says advertisers cannot influence those answers. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts are ad-free, and users can manage ad personalization or choose an ad-free option.

Who will see ads in ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s current policy says ads may appear on Free and Go accounts in supported markets. They are not shown to accounts OpenAI identifies as belonging to someone under 18. The following paid and organization plans are ad-free:

Account or plan Ad experience
Free Ads may appear in supported markets. Users can choose a Free Ads-Free option with lower message limits and reduced access to some features.
Go Ads may appear in supported markets.
Plus or Pro Ad-free.
Business, Enterprise, or Edu Ad-free.
Account identified as under 18 Ads are not shown.

Availability is regional and has expanded over time. OpenAI began its U.S. test on February 9, 2026. On August 11, it announced launches in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea. A later September 2026 announcement said ads were available in more than 40 countries. That does not mean every account in those countries will see ads: plan eligibility and the gradual rollout still apply.

Where do ads appear, and do they change ChatGPT’s answers?

Ads can appear below the end of a ChatGPT response. They are labeled as sponsored and visually separated from the answer. OpenAI says its ad system runs separately from the system that generates answers, and advertisers cannot shape, rank, or alter those answers. A paid placement is not an endorsement of the advertiser by OpenAI.

What information can advertisers see?

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive chats, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, precise location, IP addresses, or sensitive information. They may receive aggregated, non-identifying performance information, such as total views or clicks.

Ad relevance can depend on settings. With personalization off, OpenAI says relevance may use the current chat thread, general location or language, and interactions with ads. If personalized ads are enabled, broader signals from a person’s ChatGPT experience—including past chats and memory—may also contribute. OpenAI says those signals stay within ChatGPT and are not shared with advertisers as personal details.

How can you control or avoid ads?

  • Turn off ad personalization: OpenAI provides a setting to disable personalized ads. Ads may still be relevant to the current thread or other limited signals.
  • Review or dismiss an ad: You can ask why an ad was shown, hide it, or report it.
  • Clear ads data: OpenAI says deletion may take up to 30 days to remove the data from its servers.
  • Use Temporary Chat: Temporary Chats do not show ads.
  • Choose an ad-free account: Upgrade to Plus or Pro, or select the Free Ads-Free option. The free option has lower message limits and reduced feature access, including lack of access to some tools.

How can a business advertise in ChatGPT?

OpenAI describes two buying routes: work through an agency or technology partner, or use its beta self-serve Ads Manager. The named agency partners are Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP. Named technology partners are Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue, and StackAdapt. OpenAI says its own ads system makes delivery decisions.

In the beta Ads Manager, a business can register, add payment information, set a budget, bid and pacing, upload creative, launch and manage campaigns, and view performance reporting. The pilot began with CPM buying and later added CPC bidding; the available sources do not specify universal bid prices or guarantee that every buying option is available to every advertiser or market.

What campaign reporting includes

OpenAI’s advertiser basics page lists impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate (CTR), average cost per click (CPC), average cost per thousand impressions (CPM), and conversions. Impressions, clicks, and CTR refresh about every 15 minutes; spend insights may be delayed by 7–8 hours. Treat these as reporting refresh timings, not a promise that every metric or conversion appears immediately.

What ads are not allowed?

OpenAI’s ad policy requires ads to be distinguishable from the ChatGPT product. Ads may be removed or changed if they imitate ChatGPT’s appearance, functionality, or voice in a way that could confuse users. Ads are not eligible near sensitive or regulated topics such as personal health, mental health, or politics, and OpenAI says political advertising is not currently allowed in ChatGPT.

What OpenAI has reported about the rollout

In a September 2026 announcement, OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads were available in more than 40 countries, with tens of thousands of advertisers, and that the business had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate. OpenAI also cited more than 1 billion weekly active users in describing the free tier its advertising supports. These are company-reported figures, not independent measurements.
