If your Samsung phone is damaged, first check Google Photos, Samsung Cloud, and any earlier computer or Smart Switch backup. If no copy exists, the next step depends on whether the phone still powers on, can be unlocked, and accepts touch input. USB copying requires an unlocked phone; a broken screen may be workable with compatible external display and input devices, while a phone that will not turn on may need repair—and recovery is not guaranteed.
Check for existing photo copies first
Use another device to sign in to the Google account used on your phone and check Google Photos. Then check the Samsung account and Samsung Cloud. These are separate backup services: photos are available only if they were uploaded or included in a backup before the phone failed.
Samsung Cloud backups are configurable, so a device backup does not necessarily include every Gallery photo. Review the categories selected in the backup, if you can access the account. Samsung’s temporary cloud backup is intended to preserve device data before repair or a device change and retains it for up to 30 days. It requires a Samsung account and may not be available for every country, carrier, or model. Samsung Cloud backup information and Google Photos backup information explain their respective services.

Smart Switch or a computer backup made before the damage may also contain copies. Check the computer or storage location where you normally saved backups before connecting or repairing the phone.

Choose a recovery path based on what still works

If the phone powers on and you can unlock it
- Use a USB cable that supports data, not just charging.
- Unlock the phone before connecting it to the computer.
- Open the phone in the computer’s file browser.
- Copy the photo folders you need to a separate folder on the computer, then verify that the copied files open.
Samsung’s guidance is explicit: “Your phone has to be unlocked for you to access your files this way.” The computer-copy method will not help if you cannot unlock or authorize access on the handset. Samsung UK’s broken-screen data access instructions describe this requirement.
If the screen is black or unreadable, but the phone still responds
A compatible HDMI adapter may let you view the phone on a TV or monitor. Whether this works depends on the exact Galaxy model and its video-output support. If you can see the display but touch input is broken, a compatible USB mouse or keyboard connected through the appropriate adapter may let you operate and unlock the phone.

Samsung Service Korea documents a more specific setup for a device running Android 12 or later that supports DisplayPort: a USB-C HDMI hub with USB-A, an external display, an HDMI cable, and wired mouse and keyboard. The guide then uses Smart Switch after the damaged phone is unlocked. Check support for your exact model before buying an adapter or hub; Samsung does not describe this as a universal workaround. When the display works but you cannot tap, try a compatible wired USB mouse or keyboard through the appropriate adapter. Use it to unlock the phone and approve a USB connection or Smart Switch prompt. If the screen is also unreadable, you may need a compatible external display as well. These methods depend on the phone remaining operational and on model-specific accessory support; they do not bypass the lock screen.

If the phone has a removable SD card
Power the phone off if possible, remove the SD card, and read it using a computer’s card slot or a card reader. Copy the photo files to the computer. This recovers only what was stored on the card; photos saved to the phone’s internal storage will not be on it.
Use Smart Switch only if you can operate or authorize the phone
Samsung’s UK instructions describe using Smart Switch for PC or Mac to back up a connected phone. The handset may prompt you to tap Allow, so this is not a dependable route if you cannot see or operate the phone. Samsung Service Korea also describes Smart Switch transfers after unlocking the damaged device.

Do not assume a completed Smart Switch operation includes every item. Samsung notes that some data from separately installed apps is excluded according to those apps’ policies, and secure or locked content can have transfer limits depending on transfer type. For a photo-recovery job, check the destination and open a sample of the copied photos rather than relying only on the transfer-complete message. Samsung Smart Switch transfer information lists supported content and limitations.
Remote backup is possible only if it was set up already
Samsung’s remote backup route requires the phone to be online, signed in to a Samsung account, configured with remote controls enabled, and accessible with the account credentials. If those conditions were not in place before the damage, you cannot rely on turning on a backup remotely after the phone has failed. When available, the selected data is backed up to Samsung Cloud. If the phone will not turn on
Samsung says a smashed phone that will not power on may need repair. The reviewed Samsung guidance does not establish a universal way to retrieve photos from an unpowered phone, so the outcome depends on diagnosis and whether the original storage remains accessible.
Before authorizing work, tell the repair provider that the photos matter and ask whether the proposed repair could reset the phone, replace its main board, or otherwise affect the original storage. Samsung Service Korea says its service centers do not provide data-transfer service; ask the provider directly what data-preservation options, if any, apply to your case.
