To improve Starlink, check the dish’s view of the sky first, then optimize the router’s position, and use the Starlink app plus a wired speed test to find out where performance is being lost. These steps distinguish a satellite-link problem from weak in-home Wi-Fi; they do not guarantee a particular speed.

1. Check the dish’s view of the sky

Start with the connection between the dish and satellites, before changing Wi-Fi settings. Starlink says the dish needs a clear view of the sky; nearby objects such as tree branches, poles, or a roof can interrupt service as satellites move overhead.

Open the Starlink app and use its obstruction tool to check the proposed or current dish location. If it identifies obstructions, try a location with a clearer view. A higher mounting position may help when the ground-level view is blocked, but choose a mount suited to your dish generation and installation surface. Starlink’s Standard 4 setup guidance describes that model’s installation process; mounting and setup details can differ for other generations.

2. Give the router a better position

If the dish view is clear but devices have weak or inconsistent Wi-Fi, focus on the router-to-device link. Starlink recommends placing the router centrally in the home, in an open area on a hard, flat surface. Keep it upright and away from barriers and common sources of interference. Where possible, put devices in the same room as the router or only one or two rooms away.

Mini Mesh Wi-Fi Router Compatible with STARLINK Gen 2, Gen 3, Gen 4 & Mini Systems – Dual-Band Wireless Router, Mesh-Ready, Supports 128+ Devices
  • Compact & Modern Design – The Router Mini features a slim, minimalist profile (138 × 83.6 × 27 mm) that fits seamlessly into any home, office, or travel setup.

Test the connection in the rooms where you actually use it. If performance improves near the router but falls off farther away, that points to local Wi-Fi coverage rather than the dish’s view of the sky. For a larger home, Starlink’s Mini troubleshooting guidance suggests mesh or an additional router connected by wire as possible coverage options. That advice is specifically for the Mini; check compatibility with your own kit before adding networking hardware. Mesh can extend local coverage, but it cannot fix an obstructed dish view.

3. Compare app and wired speed tests

A speed test is most useful when you compare the device’s Wi-Fi connection with the Starlink connection itself. Starlink’s Advanced Speed Test in the app checks Wi-Fi speeds and can help show whether the device-to-router link is slower than the Starlink connection. If Wi-Fi results are poor, revisit router placement and test again from near the router.

Mini Mesh Wi-Fi Router Compatible with STARLINK Gen 2, Gen 3, Gen 4 & Mini Systems - Dual-Band Wireless Router, Mesh-Ready, Supports 128+ Devices
  • 🔌 Advanced Connectivity: Supports both wired (Ethernet) and wireless setup to expand your Starlink mesh network seamlessly.
  • 🧩 Easy Integration: Works with your existing Starlink system (excluding Gen 1); ideal for adding extra mesh nodes.
  • 🛠️ Versatile Installation: Mount on the wall or place on a table. Includes power supply, mounting stand, screws, and drywall anchors.
  • 📶 Optimized Performance: Best placed within two rooms of the main router; avoid obstructions like concrete walls and metal appliances.
  • 📱 Mesh Compatibility: Compatible with Starlink Gen 2 Router, Starlink Gen 3 Router, Starlink Mini Router, and Starlink Mini Kit. Not compatible for wireless mesh networking with Starlink Gen 1 routers or third-party mesh systems.

If results remain low and your hardware supports it, compare with a device connected directly by Ethernet. Starlink’s slow-speed guidance recommends a direct Ethernet connection for assessing performance and specifies Cat5e or higher for compatibility. A much better wired result than Wi-Fi points toward a local wireless issue; similarly low wired and Wi-Fi results suggest the slowdown is not limited to the device’s Wi-Fi link. A wired test is a diagnostic comparison, not a promise of higher satellite performance.

Which change addresses which problem?

Change or test Link it addresses When it may help Compatibility or hardware note
Use the app’s obstruction tool; consider a higher mount Dish to satellite The app shows obstructions, or service is interrupted by objects in the sky view A mount may be needed; match it to the dish generation and installation surface
Move the router to a central, open position Router to device over Wi-Fi Wi-Fi is weak in some rooms or improves near the router No new hardware is required to try a different location
Run the Advanced Speed Test and compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet Device-to-router Wi-Fi versus the wired connection You need to identify whether the local wireless link is a bottleneck Wired testing requires a compatible Ethernet connection; Starlink recommends Cat5e or higher
Add mesh or a wired additional router Local Wi-Fi coverage Coverage remains weak in a larger home after router placement changes Check compatibility with the specific kit; Starlink’s cited mesh advice is for Mini troubleshooting

Check kit requirements before using third-party networking

Ethernet access and adapter requirements vary by Starlink kit. Verify the exact kit’s connections before buying an adapter, cable, or third-party router. Starlink’s Standard 4 guide shows RJ45 ports for connecting wired mesh or third-party hardware, but that is not a universal specification for every generation.

  • Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
  • Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
  • Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router

Bypass mode is relevant when a third-party router is intended to manage the network: it turns off the built-in Starlink router and Wi-Fi. Confirm that the specific kit and setup require bypass mode before enabling it. Because it disables Starlink’s built-in Wi-Fi/router function, have the replacement router ready to provide your network connection.

If Starlink is offline or still slow

  1. Check the Starlink app for alerts, outages, and obstruction information.
  2. Inspect the cables and their connections, then power-cycle the router.
  3. If the problem continues, use the app’s troubleshooting guidance to decide whether a factory reset is appropriate; a reset can require setting up the network again.
  4. Contact Starlink support if these steps do not resolve the issue.

App labels and available troubleshooting steps may differ by market, kit, and software version. Starlink’s slow-speed guidance cited here comes from its Japan help centre, while its Wi-Fi placement guidance comes from its New Zealand help centre.
