To get an Ugandan IP address, connect to a VPN server in Uganda. Websites will generally see the VPN server’s exit IP instead of your ordinary public IP. Proton VPN says its Uganda locations are available on a paid plan; check that Uganda is listed in the provider’s current app and plan details before subscribing, because server availability can change.
How to get an Ugandan IP address with a VPN
A VPN is the most straightforward option for ordinary browsing or for checking how a website appears from Uganda. When you connect to a Uganda location, your internet traffic exits through that VPN location, so websites may identify the connection as coming from Uganda. This changes the apparent public IP; it does not change your physical location.
- Confirm Uganda is currently available. Check the provider’s current app, server list, or plan details. Proton VPN says a paid plan can connect to its Uganda servers and provide a Ugandan IP; that is the provider’s product claim, not an independent availability guarantee.
- Check device and plan support. Proton lists Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, Android, iPhone, and Android TV among its supported platforms. Confirm current support and whether the plan you intend to use includes Uganda.
- Install the provider’s app and sign in. Download it from the provider or your device’s official app store, then use your account to sign in.
- Select Uganda and connect. In the app’s location or server list, choose Uganda and start the connection. The exact labels can vary by app version.
- Check the apparent location. Visit a reputable IP-checking page and see whether it reports a Ugandan address or location. Different services may classify an IP differently, so this check is an indication rather than proof that every website will treat you as being in Uganda.
What to check before choosing a VPN
Do not choose solely on the basis of a country name in an old location list or a promise to work with a particular website. Check the current service and terms that matter to your use.
- Uganda availability: Is Uganda selectable in the current app, and is it included in the plan you are considering?
- Device support: Does the provider support your operating system and the device you want to use?
- Privacy and security: Read the provider’s current privacy policy and check which security controls are available. Proton VPN advertises encryption, a no-logs policy, and a kill switch; these are the provider’s own claims, not independent audit findings established here.
- Refund terms: Review the current refund conditions and eligibility before paying. No specific price or refund period is established here.
- Service rules: Check the terms of any site or app you plan to access. A Ugandan IP does not guarantee that a service will allow access.
When a residential proxy may make sense
A residential proxy is a separate option aimed at more specialized workflows, not a like-for-like privacy substitute for a consumer VPN. SmartProxy advertises Uganda residential proxies for web crawling, price monitoring, ad verification, market research, and brand monitoring. Those are vendor-described uses; its performance and quality claims are not independently verified here.

If you are considering a proxy for legitimate research or data work, confirm that Uganda locations are currently available and review the service’s session and IP behavior, usage terms, and suitability for your workflow. Do not assume that a proxy provides the privacy protections or security controls of a VPN.
Why an old server list is not enough
Smart DNS Proxy’s published server-location list does not include Uganda and says it was last updated March 19, 2024. That dated list cannot establish whether the service offers a Ugandan IP today. Do not rely on it as confirmation; check the current app or ask the provider directly. Smart DNS and VPN features may also serve different purposes, so a service description mentioning regional access does not by itself establish that it has a Uganda VPN endpoint.

Will a Ugandan IP unlock a streaming service?
Not necessarily. An IP address that appears to be in Uganda does not prove that a streaming platform or other online service will accept the connection. Individual services can block or restrict VPN and proxy traffic, and availability can depend on the service’s own rules. Check the platform’s terms and current access conditions rather than relying on a provider’s general regional-access claims.

Is using a VPN in Uganda legal?
The available information does not establish a definitive answer about current VPN legality in Uganda. The Uganda Communications Commission’s description of its communications mandate does not resolve that question, and a VPN provider’s marketing statement is not sufficient legal authority. For advice about a specific situation, consult current official guidance or a qualified local legal professional.
