Google Drive’s documented workflow does not promise to convert an ordinary HEIC image into JPG when you download it. To get a real JPG, export it from an image editor or converter with a JPEG option. You can also import the Drive photo into Google Photos, but verify the downloaded file: Google’s help documents the import, not a JPG output guarantee.
Does Google Drive convert HEIC to JPG?
Google’s Drive API export list includes JPEG for certain Google Workspace document types, but it does not document conversion of ordinary HEIC images. That document-export feature should not be treated as an HEIC converter: Google Drive API export formats.
The available documentation also does not settle whether downloading an ordinary HEIC file directly from Drive preserves HEIC or offers a JPG option. Check the downloaded file’s extension rather than assuming it is JPEG.
Use Google Photos to import the Drive photo
Google Photos accepts HEIC files in its documented Drive-import workflow. The photo must be larger than 256 pixels. Importing it copies the file into Photos; Drive and Photos manage their copies separately, so edits in one service do not change the other.

- Choose the option to import photos from Google Drive.
- Find and select the HEIC photo, then upload it to Photos.
- If you specifically need a
.jpgfile, download the result and check its extension. The import instructions do not guarantee that Photos will download it as JPG.
For work or school accounts, Google directs users to download the photo from Drive and re-upload it to Photos instead of using the import option: Google Photos Help: Add photos and videos from Google Drive.
Convert the HEIC file with an image app
If the receiving app or website requires JPG, open the HEIC image in an image editor or converter that explicitly offers JPEG or JPG export. Save or export a new file, then confirm its extension before uploading or sending it. This produces a separate converted file; keep the original HEIC if you may need it later.

Consider a Drive-connected add-on carefully
The Workspace Marketplace listing for HEIC Image Viewer Decoder says it can open HEIC/HEIF files and save them as JPEG or PNG. That is the developer’s listing claim, not an independently verified result. Test it with the specific file and account before relying on it, and consider whether you are comfortable granting a third-party add-on access to the file.

Choose the workflow that fits your requirement
- Need a confirmed JPG file: Use an image app or converter with an explicit JPEG export option, then verify the saved file.
- Want to keep the photo in Google’s photo service: Import it from Drive into Google Photos, then check the downloaded output format.
- Prefer a Drive-connected route: An add-on listing claims JPEG export, but verify compatibility and access requirements before using it.
