If your Apple Watch responds, disconnect it from its charger, hold the side button until the power controls appear, and use the Power Off slider. If it will not respond or shut down, hold the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends force-restarting only when a normal restart is not possible. Apple’s restart instructions cover both methods.
Choose the right restart for what the watch is doing
| What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
| The display responds and you can use the controls | Disconnect the watch from its charger and perform a normal restart using the Power Off slider. |
| The watch is unresponsive or will not turn off normally | Force-restart by holding the side button and Digital Crown together for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. |
| The display is blank or shows a red lightning bolt | Check charging and power before assuming the watch is frozen. Apple says a red lightning bolt means the battery does not have enough charge to turn on. |
These procedures address different situations. Holding only the side button opens the power controls on a responsive watch; it is not the force-restart command. The force-restart combination is both the side button and the Digital Crown, held at the same time. Apple Support advises using force restart only if you cannot restart normally.
How to restart Apple Watch normally
- Take the watch off its charger. Apple says the watch cannot be restarted while it is charging.
- Open the power controls. Hold the side button until the sliders appear.
- Turn it off. Tap the power control, then drag the Power Off slider.
- Turn it back on. Once the watch has shut down, hold the side button until the Apple logo appears.
If the screen responds, use this method first. It lets the watch shut down through its normal controls rather than interrupting an unresponsive device.
How to force-restart an unresponsive Apple Watch
- Press and hold the side button and Digital Crown at the same time.
- Keep holding both for at least 10 seconds.
- Release them when the Apple logo appears.
Do not release the buttons just because the screen remains unchanged for a few seconds; Apple’s minimum hold is at least 10 seconds. If the watch can still display and use its power controls, return to the normal restart instead.

If the screen is blank, check charging first
A blank display may reflect a depleted battery rather than a frozen watch. If you see a red lightning bolt, Apple says there is not enough battery power to turn on. Connect the watch to its charger and allow up to 30 minutes for a charging indicator to appear when the battery is depleted. Apple’s charging and power troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the following:
- Make sure the charging cable is fully connected to its power source.
- Check that the watch is aligned on the magnetic charger.
- Clean the back of the watch and the charger.
- If no charging indicator appears, try another Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable or USB-C Magnetic Fast Charging Cable, and another USB power adapter. Check accessory compatibility with your watch model.
A charging cable is relevant to this power check; it is not required to restart a powered watch.

If the watch stays on the Apple logo
If the Apple logo remains after force-restarting, Apple’s next steps are to unpair and pair the watch again, check for and install a watchOS update in the Apple Watch app, and arrange service if it is still stuck. Apple says the iPhone creates a backup when you unpair the watch. Follow the current steps in Apple’s guide to a watch stuck on the Apple logo.
If the side button or Digital Crown does not work
The force-restart sequence depends on both controls. Remove any protective film or case that might obstruct the side button or Digital Crown, then check for dirt or debris. If a control is damaged, works intermittently, or still fails to function, Apple recommends arranging service for the watch.
