Connect the DVD player’s HDMI OUT to the TV’s HDMI IN if both devices have HDMI, then use the TV remote’s Input or Source control to select that HDMI port. If HDMI is not available, use matching component or composite connections and select the corresponding TV input.
Check which connections both devices support
Look at the back or side of the DVD player and TV. Match an output on the player to an input on the TV: connect jacks marked OUT on the player to jacks marked IN on the TV. TV connections vary by model and region, so check the manuals if the labels or sockets are unclear. Sony notes that analog connections and any required extension lead can depend on the TV model and region (Sony Help Guide; Sony support).
- HDMI: The simplest option when both devices have HDMI. Sony recommends HDMI when the DVD player has an HDMI jack (Sony Help Guide).
- Component video: Three video plugs—green Y, blue PB, and red PR—plus separate red and white audio plugs. The TV and player both need matching component connections (Panasonic: How to connect a DVD player to a television).
- Composite video: Yellow carries video; white and red carry left and right audio. Both devices need compatible composite connections (Panasonic: How to connect a DVD player to a television).
Connect the DVD player and select the TV input
HDMI
- Connect an HDMI cable from the DVD player’s HDMI OUT to an available HDMI IN on the TV.
- Turn on the TV and DVD player.
- Press the TV remote’s Input, Source, or TV/Video control and select the HDMI port you used. The wording and menu can vary by model; the important part is to choose the matching input (Panasonic connection steps; LG connection guide).
- Insert a disc and press Play.
Composite (yellow, white, red)
- Connect yellow to the matching video jack at each end. Connect white to L/left audio and red to R/right audio.
- Turn on the devices, then choose the TV’s corresponding Video or AV input.
- Insert a disc and press Play.
Component (green, blue, red video plus red and white audio)
- Match the video plugs: green to Y, blue to PB, and red to PR. Connect the separate red and white audio plugs to the corresponding audio jacks.
- Turn on both devices and select the TV’s component input.
- Insert a disc and press Play. If you have a picture but no sound, check the separate red and white audio connections.
If the TV has no matching analog jacks
Check the TV manual and supplied accessories before buying a cable or converter. Some TVs use a small multi-pole analog jack that needs a model-specific extension lead; a generic 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable may not have the correct wiring. Sony documents model- and region-dependent analog connections (Sony support). If the TV has no supported component or composite input, consult both device manuals for a conversion method that supports your exact models. The connection guidance cited here does not establish that any generic adapter will work.

Fix a blank screen or missing sound
- “No signal” or a black screen: Confirm the DVD player is powered on, the cable is fully seated, and the TV is set to the exact input used. Check that the cable runs from player OUT to TV IN.
- Picture but no sound over component: Component video does not replace the separate stereo audio leads in Panasonic’s connection instructions; check the red and white plugs (Panasonic connection steps).
- Plugs do not fit or colors do not match: Check the TV manual for its analog format and any required model-specific extension lead before purchasing anything.
- Considering an audio-return jack: Do not assume a TV audio-return port is a DVD video input. LG discusses ARC in the context of audio-system connections; use a TV input documented for video (LG connection guide).
