Germany is home to the tallest serial-produced onshore wind turbine reported as standing: the Winnberg turbine near Sengenthal, which reaches 285 metres from ground to blade tip. That is a height record, not a claim that it has the world’s greatest generating capacity or largest rotor. A taller German design, GICON’s 365-metre high-altitude wind tower, was still described as a planned project in its July 2025 announcement.

What is Germany’s tallest wind turbine?

The Winnberg turbine in Bavaria is a Vestas V172-7.2 MW machine on a 199-metre hybrid tower built by Max Bögl. Max Bögl said on 8 September 2026 that it was standing at 285 metres total height, making it the tallest serial-produced onshore wind turbine. The company said commissioning was planned for autumn 2026; that announcement establishes that the turbine was standing, not that it had already entered service.

“Total height” means the highest point reached by a blade when it is upright. “Hub height” is the height of the rotor’s centre above the ground. The turbine’s nameplate capacity is 7.2 megawatts (MW), a separate measure of its rated power.

How does Winnberg compare with the other German projects?

The figures below describe different kinds of claims: Winnberg is a standing individual onshore turbine, GICON is a planned individual turbine, and He Dreiht is an offshore wind farm containing many turbines.

Project Status in cited announcement Total height Hub height Rotor diameter Capacity Setting and scale
Winnberg, Max Bögl/Vestas Standing; commissioning was planned for autumn 2026 (Max Bögl, 8 September 2026) 285 m 199 m 172 m (V172 model designation; Vestas model) 7.2 MW per turbine Onshore; one turbine
GICON high-altitude wind tower Planned development and construction project (GICON, 16 July 2025) 365 m 300 m Not stated (GICON announcement) 3.8 MW per turbine (GICON specification) Onshore; one planned turbine at Klettwitz
He Dreiht, EnBW Offshore wind-farm project data reported by EnBW in September 2026 Not stated (EnBW project data) 142 m 236 m 15.0 MW per turbine; 960 MW total farm output Offshore; 64 turbines
Nordex N175/6.X order Three turbines ordered for installation during 2027 (Nordex) Not stated (Nordex order announcement) 199 m 175 m (N175 model designation; Nordex model) 7 MW nominal output per turbine Onshore; three planned turbines

Model names such as V172 and N175 denote rotor diameter in metres, rather than hub height or total turbine height. The different measures explain why a turbine can be exceptionally tall without being the most powerful: Winnberg’s 285-metre total height is the relevant comparison for the reported serial-produced onshore height record, while He Dreiht’s 960 MW describes the combined output of an entire wind farm.

Is the 365-metre GICON turbine already the world’s tallest?

Not on the evidence in GICON’s 16 July 2025 announcement. It described a planned 365-metre tower at Klettwitz, with a 300-metre hub, and presented it as an intended world-tallest wind turbine. That specification is 80 metres taller than Winnberg, but a proposed height is not a completed record. The announcement does not establish that the GICON turbine has since been built or is operating.

GICON specified a lattice tower made from more than 2,000 tonnes of steel and 22,000 individual parts, carrying a 3.8 MW VENSYS turbine. The developer forecast at least about 18 million kilowatt-hours of annual generation—enough, by its estimate, for around 6,000 households. These are developer specifications and projections, not independently audited operating results.

Why build turbines with taller towers?

Max Bögl says greater hub heights can reach stronger, more consistent inland winds. GICON likewise says its 300-metre hub concept is intended to access stronger and steadier winds at high altitude. These are the companies’ explanations for the designs; the project announcements do not provide a controlled comparison of energy output against shorter towers.

Germany’s recent installation figures show the direction of the industry. FA Wind und Solar reported that turbines commissioned in Germany during 2025 averaged 5.46 MW capacity, a 151-metre rotor diameter, a 146-metre hub height and a 222-metre total height. Turbines permitted during 2025 averaged 6.3 MW, with a mean rotor diameter above 160 metres. These are national averages for different project cohorts, not specifications for Winnberg or a forecast that every permitted turbine will be built.

What the height record does—and does not—mean

  • Height: Winnberg’s 285 metres is the total height reported for a standing, serial-produced onshore turbine.
  • Capacity: Its 7.2 MW rating is the turbine’s nameplate power, not its height or annual energy production.
  • Rotor size: The V172 model has a 172-metre rotor diameter; a larger rotor does not by itself establish a greater total height.
  • Farm output: He Dreiht’s 960 MW is the combined capacity of 64 offshore turbines, not one giant turbine.
  • Record status: Winnberg’s structure was reported standing, with commissioning still planned in the dated announcement; GICON’s taller figure was a project specification, not a completed turbine.
