A Georgia woman reportedly said an MRI technologist asked whether she was wearing Lululemon, prompting her to learn that some activewear can contain materials that may heat during an MRI. That encounter was reported secondhand by a news outlet and has not been independently verified here. Separately, an FDA incident report documents a patient who suffered a first-degree burn while wearing a Lululemon shirt that was found to contain metal thread. The cases are distinct—and neither supports a claim that all Lululemon clothing, or all athletic wear, is unsafe.
What happened in the Georgia woman’s reported encounter?
A secondary news report described a Georgia woman’s social-media account: she said an MRI technologist asked if she was wearing Lululemon, leading her to learn that some athletic garments may contain metallic components. The account is not an independently verified medical incident report, so it should be understood as her reported experience—not proof that a particular item caused a hazard.
What does the FDA report say about a Lululemon shirt?
An FDA MedSun report dated October 16, 2015, records a first-degree burn during an MRI. The report says the patient’s Lululemon shirt was assessed and found to have metal thread. It documents one reported event involving one shirt; it does not establish that all garments from the brand contain metal or pose a risk.
FDA adverse-event reports are reports, not a measure of how often injuries occur or proof of causation in every case. For example, a 2024 FDA MAUDE entry describes a patient who reported burns a week after imaging while wearing leggings, but the entry does not establish that the leggings or MRI caused the injury.

Why can clothing be a concern during MRI?
MRI safety involves more than whether an object will be pulled toward the magnet. The scanner uses a strong static magnetic field, changing magnetic fields, and radiofrequency energy. FDA guidance identifies heating and burns as potential hazards. Metallic threads, fibers, fasteners, or metal-based antibacterial compounds in clothing can heat during an MRI; RadiologyInfo advises removing clothing that contains such components.
Heating is different from the projectile hazard
Some ferromagnetic objects can move toward the scanner’s magnet, creating a projectile or movement hazard. The clothing concern described in patient guidance is that components may heat and burn skin. A garment need not be obviously magnetic to raise a heating concern, and the presence of metal does not mean every garment will behave the same way.

The FDA says it receives around 300 adverse-event reports involving MRI scanners and coils each year, and that most describe heating and/or burns. That is a count of reports, not an injury rate or a statistic about clothing.
What should you wear or do before an MRI?
- Ask the MRI facility what clothing is acceptable. Requirements can vary by facility and scan. Follow its instructions; some facilities may ask you to change into a gown.
- Answer screening questions accurately. Tell staff about implants, drug patches, tattoos, and other relevant concerns, and follow directions about what to remove. RadiologyInfo recommends removing clothing with metallic threads, fibers, fasteners, or metal-based antibacterial compounds.
- Do not rely on a brand name or appearance to judge safety. If you are unsure about an item, ask staff rather than trying to determine its contents yourself.
- Speak up during the scan if you feel unusual heating or burning. Alert the technologist immediately so they can respond.
Does this mean Lululemon or yoga pants are unsafe for MRI?
No broad brand-level conclusion is supported by these reports. The 2015 FDA record concerns one shirt that was found to contain metal thread; the Georgia woman’s encounter is a separate, secondhand account. Some athletic garments may contain materials that are unsuitable for an MRI, but the available evidence does not establish that all Lululemon items—or all leggings and yoga pants—contain them. The practical decision belongs to the MRI facility’s screening and clothing instructions.
