Georgia Power has reported unauthorized access to information associated with approximately 400,000 customer accounts across Southern Company utilities—not 400,000 Georgia Power accounts alone. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) reported that about 300,000 were Georgia Power customers and roughly 100,000 were customers of Alabama Power and Mississippi Power combined. Reported information included names and contact details, basic account information, and the last four digits of Social Security numbers for some customers. The company said bank account, payment card, and driver’s license numbers were not accessed.
How many accounts were affected?
The approximately 400,000 figure is the reported Southern Company-wide total across Georgia Power, Alabama Power, and Mississippi Power. The AJC’s approximate breakdown is:
| Utility group | Reported affected accounts |
|---|---|
| Georgia Power | About 300,000 |
| Alabama Power and Mississippi Power combined | About 100,000 |
| All three utilities | Approximately 400,000 |
These are approximate counts reported from company communications, not results of an independent study. The public reports do not provide a final confirmed count for each utility.

- Check email and postal mail. Look for an official notice from your utility. If you are unsure whether a message is genuine, do not use contact details in that message to verify it.
- Confirm eligibility and enrollment instructions in your own notice. Follow the activation details provided to you. The public reporting does not establish an enrollment deadline, full service terms, or whether every utility used identical notice language.
- Contact the utility through a trusted route if needed. Use the phone number printed on your bill or the utility’s website to ask whether you are affected and how to enroll.
How to avoid impersonation scams
CBS Atlanta reported Georgia Power’s advice to be wary of people claiming to represent the company and to contact it through the number on your bill or its website if uncertain. The company also said it would not threaten immediate disconnection or demand payment over the phone. This is the company’s reported guidance; it is not a guarantee about every possible contact channel.
- Do not share account credentials, verification codes, or payment information in response to an unexpected call, text, or email.
- Do not click a notice link just because it uses the utility’s name. Navigate to the company’s website independently or use the contact information on your bill.
- If a caller pressures you to pay immediately or threatens disconnection, end the call and contact the utility through a trusted number.
What remains undisclosed
The public reporting does not establish the exact access method, attacker identity, complete incident date range, final account count by utility, or full Equifax enrollment terms. The AJC also reported a consumer advocate’s concern about the timing of public disclosure and described Georgia’s breach-notification law as requiring notice in the most expedient time possible without unreasonable delay, without setting a fixed deadline. That reporting does not determine whether notice in this case complied with the law.
