George R.R. Martin has praised HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, but his official comments do not establish it as his favorite Game of Thrones series—or prove that it is “the King of Streaming.” The series adapts The Hedge Knight, the first Dunk & Egg story; no verified streaming ranking or viewership figure accompanies the superlative.

Which Game of Thrones series is Martin talking about?

The series is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO’s adaptation of The Hedge Knight, the first of George R.R. Martin’s Dunk & Egg stories. Martin identifies the source story in his official blog posts, including “A Tourney at Ashford” and his 2023 adaptation announcement, “A Knight and a Squire.”

Martin’s remarks show enthusiasm, not a ranking of the franchise’s shows. After watching recent cuts, he wrote: “I love it lots, but I’m not one to judge.” That is a positive reaction to this production, not a declaration that it is his single favorite Game of Thrones series.

Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms the “King of Streaming”?

That claim is not established by the available official comments. Martin’s posts do not report a streaming rank or audience total. Without a named measurement source, metric, territory, and time period, “King of Streaming” should be treated as an unverified headline superlative—not a confirmed performance result.

A meaningful streaming comparison would need to identify what is being compared: for example, hours watched or households, over a stated period and in a defined market. No such figure is established in the cited sources, so they cannot show that the series outranks Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, or other streaming titles.

How the series differs from the other Thrones shows

The clearest supported comparisons are chronology, scale, and source material—not popularity.

  • Chronology: Martin places the Dunk & Egg stories roughly 90 years before A Game of Thrones, according to his 2015 post, “Dunk & Egg Are HERE.”
  • Story scale: In “A Tourney at Ashford,” Martin says most of the story takes place on a tournament field and describes the production as smaller in scale than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon.
  • Source material: It adapts the first Dunk & Egg novella, rather than the full three-story collection.

What book is the series based on?

The collected book A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms contains three Dunk & Egg novellas: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. Martin announced the collection as an illustrated hardcover in 2015. The show’s first-season source story is The Hedge Knight; the existence of the other two novellas in the book does not mean they are all adapted in that season.

If you want to read the source, the collected A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the relevant book. It is optional background, not a prerequisite for watching the adaptation.

Where can you watch A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms?

Availability depends on your country and the streaming services’ current terms. The cited statements establish HBO’s adaptation, but do not verify present-day availability in any particular territory. Check the official HBO or local service listing where you live before subscribing.

How many episodes are in the first season?

In his April 2023 announcement, Martin described six episodes as the plan for the first season, while noting that the count was not final at that time. That is a dated, provisional plan; the post alone does not confirm the final episode count.
