The 2023 MOVEit breach affected data held by PBI Research Services/Berwyn Group, a vendor used by Genworth and CalPERS—not systems operated by Genworth or CalPERS, according to both organizations. Genworth reported that about 2.5 million to 2.7 million customers or insurance agents were affected; CalPERS reported personal information involving approximately 769,000 retirees and beneficiaries. The records could include Social Security numbers and other identifying or policy details, but the fields varied by person.
Was my Genworth policy information exposed in the MOVEit hack?
It may have been if you were among the affected Genworth customers or insurance agents. PBI told Genworth on June 16, 2023, that specific Genworth files had been compromised in the MOVEit Transfer attack. Genworth’s incident FAQ and later SEC disclosures put the affected population at approximately 2.5 million to 2.7 million customers or agents. The reported population included life-insurance, individual and group long-term-care insurance, and annuity customers.
That range is Genworth’s reported scale; it does not mean every person in those product groups was affected, nor does it establish which fields were exposed for any particular person. If you received a notice, use the contact details in that authentic notice to confirm what information it says was involved.

What to do after receiving a Genworth or CalPERS breach letter
- Verify the notice. Use the phone number or website printed in the notice, checking that it is authentic before providing personal information. Do not rely on contact details from an unsolicited call or email claiming to follow up.
- Enroll in offered protection. If your CalPERS notice includes free credit monitoring and identity-theft protection, follow its enrollment instructions and note any deadline. The cited CalPERS announcement confirms the offer; it does not establish that the same offer applied to every Genworth recipient.
- Review credit reports and financial statements. Look for accounts or transactions you do not recognize, and contact the relevant financial institution using its official contact channel if you find suspicious activity.
- Consider a fraud alert or credit freeze. These are general consumer precautions, not steps the cited Genworth or CalPERS statements specifically directed every recipient to take. A freeze can restrict access to your credit file for new credit applications; a fraud alert asks creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity.
- Be alert for targeted phishing. Treat unexpected calls, texts, or emails asking for a policy number, Social Security number, pension details, password, or payment as suspicious. The exposed information could make a message sound convincing; verify requests independently.
Does the breach mean someone used my information for identity theft?
No confirmed count of downstream identity-theft victims is published in the cited Genworth and CalPERS materials. The organizations reported exposure, not that every affected person experienced fraud. Continue monitoring the accounts and credit information relevant to you, and respond promptly to any activity you do not recognize.
