Genting UK has warned that 13 of its 32 venues could become “unprofitable or unsustainable” if a reported increase in Machine Games Duty (MGD) goes ahead. That is a conditional warning, not confirmation that any venue has closed or that a closure programme has begun. AOL reports that Genting estimates 900 roles could be affected, but the company has not named the venues at risk.
What did Genting UK warn?
In an October 3, 2026 report, AOL said Genting UK chief executive Paul Willcock identified 13 of the company’s 32 venues as potentially unprofitable or unsustainable under the reported tax proposal. The warning concerns more than one in three of its venues, but it does not mean those sites are certain to shut.
AOL also reported Genting’s estimate that the change could put 900 roles at risk. The report did not identify which venues or jobs might be affected. These are the operator’s estimates as relayed by AOL, not independently verified forecasts. AOL’s report.

What tax increase is being discussed?
AOL describes a possible increase in the standard MGD rate from 20% to 40%. The 40% figure is a reported proposal, not the rate shown in HM Revenue & Customs’ published 2026–27 guidance. HMRC lists rates by machine type, and MGD is charged on net takings from dutiable machine games.

|---|---|---|
| Type 1 | 5% | Type 1 machines, as defined by HMRC guidance. |
| Type 2 | 20% | A machine that is not Type 1 and costs no more than £5 to play. |
| Type 3 | 25% | A machine that does not qualify as Type 1 or Type 2. |
See HMRC’s 2026–27 MGD rates and allowances and HMRC’s explanation of Machine Games Duty. The Social Market Foundation has also argued for higher MGD on Category B machines; that establishes a proposal in public debate, not government adoption. Social Market Foundation publications.

Are the casinos closing?
No closures are confirmed by the reported warnings.
