Genshin Impact has changed how it presents combat challenges over the years, but the available evidence does not prove that character balance became fairer or that more characters became viable. Official update notices document rotating Spiral Abyss enemies and bonuses, while Imaginarium Theater introduced a separate format with seasonal roster and element restrictions. Those changes show continued tuning of encounters; they do not measure its effect on players or the playable cast.
Has Genshin Impact gotten better at balancing characters?
There is not enough evidence here to say. The documented changes are mostly changes to combat context: which enemies appear, what bonuses apply, and which characters or elements a mode permits. That is different from changing a character’s abilities or demonstrating that the roster is more evenly useful.
To establish that character balance improved over six years, a consistent body of evidence would need to show outcomes such as character use, clear rates, roster diversity, or player perceptions of fairness across versions. The cited update notices and developer-discussion summary do not provide those measurements. The defensible conclusion is narrower: HoYoverse has continued to vary and refine combat formats, but whether that produced better character balance remains unproven by these sources.

What changed in Genshin Impact’s combat challenges?
Spiral Abyss: a recurring change to the encounter
Spiral Abyss has long used rotations to change the challenge players face. HoYoverse’s Version 2.1 update notice in 2021 records a dated Abyss update, including a new phase and when it would take effect. That establishes an early example of a changing Abyss environment; a single notice does not describe every update in the intervening years.

Later notices make the moving parts more explicit. The Version 5.6 update details in 2025 changed Floor 11 and Floor 12 bonuses and updated the enemy lineups on Floors 11–12, as well as announcing two timed Abyss phases. The Luna VI update details in 2026 likewise announced a season with changed floor bonuses and lineups, and described a new Abyss blessing. These are examples of encounter rotation—not evidence that the rotations consistently made more characters useful.
Imaginarium Theater: a different kind of roster pressure
Imaginarium Theater added a format with a different set of constraints. A 2024 summary of a developer discussion reported that the mode’s initial design intention was to offer diverse combat experiences through new scenarios, and that optimizations were being developed. This is a report of stated intent, not proof that the mode achieved greater diversity. The summary does not identify a named speaker or provide an exact attributable quotation.

The Version 5.6 and Luna VI notices show how the format works in practice: their seasonal rules specify eligible elements, opening characters, and special guests. Those requirements make the available roster an explicit part of the challenge. They may encourage players to build or use a wider selection of characters, but that is a plausible effect, not a measured result in the cited material.
How do Spiral Abyss and Imaginarium Theater differ?
| What changes | Spiral Abyss | Imaginarium Theater |
|---|---|---|
| Challenge design | Examples include rotating enemy lineups and floor bonuses (Animon Official, Version 5.6 Update Details, 2025; Animon Official, Luna VI Update Details, 2026). | Season-specific rules and blessings (Animon Official, Version 5.6 Update Details, 2025; Animon Official, Luna VI Update Details, 2026). |
| Roster constraint | The cited notices foreground adapting teams to the current encounter; they do not specify the same kind of eligible-element roster restriction described for Theater. | Notices specify eligible elements, opening characters, and special guests for the season (Animon Official, Version 5.6 Update Details, 2025; Animon Official, Luna VI Update Details, 2026). |
| Documented player support | The cited notices do not state comparable guidance additions for Abyss. | Version 5.6 added more information about Brilliant Blessings, recommended character tags, tutorial hints, and a restart option for the final act (Animon Official, Version 5.6 Update Details, 2025). |
| Measured effect on character balance | Not stated in the cited update notices. | Not stated in the cited update notices or developer-discussion summary. |
The distinction matters: a changing Abyss lineup asks players to adapt their teams to a changing encounter, while Theater’s stated seasonal eligibility rules put direct limits on which elements and characters are available. The formats therefore create different pressures on an account, but the cited material does not compare their effects on character usage or fairness.

- It is the Taisho Period in Japan; Tanjiro, a kindhearted boy who sells charcoal for a living, finds his family slaughtered by a demon
- Tanjiro resolves to become a “demon slayer” so that he can turn his sister back into a human and kill the demon that massacred his family
- Follow Tanjiro through the story from the “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba” anime as he faces demons in order to turn his sister Nezuko, who has become a demon, back into a human
- Master the multitude of spectacular skills of a wide roster of characters from the anime, including Tanjiro and Nezuko, to overcome challengers in head-to-head battle, locally and online
What appears to have worked—and what remains unclear
What the record supports
- Encounter variety is an established design tool. The dated Version 2.1 example and later Abyss notices document changes to phases, enemies, bonuses, and blessings.
- A second format broadened the types of constraints. Theater’s seasonal element and character rules differ from the rotating enemy-and-bonus examples documented for Abyss.
- Some later updates improved the information and controls available to Theater players. Version 5.6 added blessing details, recommended tags and tutorial hints, plus a restart option for the final act. These changes can make rules or options clearer; they do not directly change the strength of the playable cast.
What the record does not establish
- Whether more characters became viable or saw increased use.
- Whether completion rates, perceived difficulty, or fairness improved.
- Whether rotations systematically helped characters who were less useful in earlier seasons.
Those questions require outcome data over time. Update notices establish that rules and features changed, but they do not show what those changes did to player choices or experiences.
Does the TCG adjustment count as character balancing?
Not for the main action-combat roster. HoYoverse’s Version 4.8 Update Details in 2024 documented a Genius Invokation TCG card-effect adjustment. That is an example of a direct adjustment within the in-game card system, but it should not be treated as evidence about the balance of playable characters in Genshin Impact’s action combat.

- The ad-free feature is especially beneficial for a seamless gaming experience. Ads can often be disruptive and distracting, so having the option to play without them significantly improves overall enjoyment. With no interruptions, players can focus solely on strategy and gameplay, creating a smoother and more immersive experience.
What is the fairest verdict after six years?
The documented history shows a game that continued to rotate Abyss encounters, introduced Theater with a distinct set of seasonal roster rules, and later added guidance and a restart option to that newer mode. Those are concrete design and usability changes. They show that combat challenges were being tuned; they do not, by themselves, show that character balance improved. Without comparable longitudinal data on character use, clears, roster diversity, or player fairness, the answer to “Has Genshin Impact gotten better at balancing characters?” is still open.
