A Genshin Impact tier list is one guide author’s estimate of character performance under specific assumptions—not an official or universal verdict on who you should build or pull. Use a ranking as a starting point, then check its patch, role, content, investment assumptions, and fit with your roster.
What a Genshin Impact tier list actually tells you
A tier is a relative judgment within a guide’s chosen scope. It answers something like, “How does this author rate this character for this role and content?” It does not automatically answer whether that character is the best choice for your account.
Rankings are generally editorial or community assessments, not official HoYoverse data. For example, GenshinPatch’s August 4, 2026 list explicitly describes its rankings as community meta opinions and assumes reasonable artifact investment. The Icy Veins Version 7.1 list, updated September 23, 2026, calls its placements rough estimates of performance relative to other characters in a role.
Role matters more than a single letter grade
A Main DPS, Sub DPS, and Support contribute in different ways. Icy Veins separates its Version 7.1 rankings into those roles, which makes comparisons more meaningful than treating every character as if they compete for the same job. A support’s value is not directly equivalent to an on-field damage dealer’s.

A ranking is not a viability test
Holster, author of Icy Veins’ Version 7.1 list, writes: “Please know that every character in Genshin Impact is viable regardless of their ranking and can clear all content with enough investment.” That is the author’s view, not an official HoYoverse guarantee, but it highlights an important distinction: a lower placement does not mean a character cannot work.
Why two tier lists can disagree
Lists may be evaluating different goals, builds, or account conditions. Compare their criteria before comparing their grades.
Rank #2
Patch and update date
Check whether the lists cover the same game version and when each was revised. Character releases and guide updates can change the snapshot. The KeqingMains guide index lists Version 7.1 Phase I updates dated September 2026; an older ranking may reflect a different roster or evaluation context.

A guide focused on Spiral Abyss may value performance differently from one that also weighs exploration, overworld comfort, or broader account usefulness. GenshinPatch describes its scope as overall account value, team flexibility, investment efficiency, and performance across Spiral Abyss, overworld, and endgame content. ForgeGuides’ July 11, 2026 list uses a different editorial rubric: 60% Spiral Abyss performance, 25% overworld and exploration utility, and 15% future investment security. Those percentages are ForgeGuides’ weighting choices, not measured game-wide statistics or an industry standard.
Investment assumptions
Look for constellation, weapon, artifact, and team assumptions. ForgeGuides says it assumes C0 for five-star characters and C6 for four-star characters unless noted otherwise. GenshinPatch says its rankings assume reasonable artifact investment. If your character’s constellation or equipment differs, the placement may not describe your likely result.
Role and team context
Some characters become more valuable when paired with particular teammates or when they fill a role your account lacks. A ranking that assumes access to certain teammates may not transfer cleanly to a roster without them. If a guide does not clearly state its team assumptions, treat that as uncertainty rather than assuming the grade applies unchanged to every account.
How to judge a ranking for your account
- Match the version and date. Prefer lists updated for the patch you are playing, and note when the guide was last revised.
- Identify the role. Compare a character with others doing a similar job, such as Main DPS, Sub DPS, or Support, instead of using one cross-role grade as a complete answer.
- Check the target content. Decide whether you care most about Spiral Abyss, exploration, endgame modes, or flexible account value. A list’s priorities should match yours.
- Read the build assumptions. Look for constellation level, weapon quality, artifact investment, and the teams the author expects. A ranking is less useful when your setup differs substantially.
- Check your roster and preferences. Ask whether you own workable teammates, need the character’s role, are willing to invest in them, and enjoy playing them. A high rank alone does not make a character the right pull or build.
Use build guides to inspect what rankings leave out
A tier list compresses many details into a placement. Character build resources can help you examine some of those details instead of treating a grade as a complete build recommendation.
Recommended Free Tools
- KeqingMains’ guide index organizes character guides and theorycrafting resources, including builds, artifacts, weapons, and teams.
- GameWith’s artifact guide, updated October 5, 2026, lists character-specific artifact sets and stat priorities. Those recommendations can help you understand build assumptions; they do not establish one universally optimal build for every character.
Questions a tier list cannot answer on its own
“What characters are good to invest in?”, “What teams should I build?”, “What weapon can I use?”, and “Should I use this character with this team?” all depend on account details. To get a useful account-specific answer, include your roster, constellations, equipment, intended content, and the characters you like playing.
