Does the source image need to be square?

Square cropping does not solve every design problem. A wide wordmark can become unreadable when the sides are cut away, while fine text, thin strokes, and detailed illustrations can disappear at 16×16 or 32×32 pixels. Before exporting, keep the important mark large enough to remain recognizable and check the smallest preview rather than judging only the large crop.
A strong source image usually has high resolution, good contrast, limited fine detail, and enough padding around the mark. A transparent background can work well, but test the result against both light and dark browser interface backgrounds. A dark icon or transparent edge that looks fine in an image editor may have poor contrast in a browser tab.

This is a useful package, but “all sizes” would be too broad. The cited official pages do not establish that Genfavicon supplies every PWA manifest icon, Windows tile asset, macOS Safari pinned-tab mask icon, or platform-specific metadata file. Those requirements may need separate artwork and configuration.
How do you use Genfavicon?
The official workflow has three stages: select an image, crop and preview it, then download the result. The live interface allows an upload from the device or an image URL.
- Open Genfavicon. Go to genfavicon.com.
- Choose the source. Use the file-upload control or paste a publicly accessible image URL. Use the file-upload route when a remote host blocks external image requests.
- Crop the artwork. Frame the most recognizable square area. Keep the central mark large enough to survive reduction.
- Inspect the preview. Check the result at small sizes, especially 16×16 and 32×32. Look for clipped edges, unreadable text, weak contrast, and unwanted transparent padding.
- Download the package. Save the generated archive or files immediately. Genfavicon’s FAQ says workspaces are temporary and recommends downloading the ZIP once satisfied.
- Keep a local copy. Store the package with the project’s brand assets. Closing the tab and waiting for workspace cleanup may mean starting the conversion again.
Button labels and screen states can change, so verify the exact labels in the live interface before publishing screenshots or highly specific UI instructions.
How do you install Genfavicon files on a website?

Root directories and subdirectories
The path /favicon.ico points to the domain root. A website installed under a subdirectory such as /blog/ may need a different path, depending on its hosting and URL structure. Open each deployed favicon URL directly in a browser to confirm that the server returns the intended image rather than a 404 page.
Content-management systems
WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, and other hosted systems may provide a Site Icon, Favicon, or Branding control. Use the platform’s site-icon field when available, because the platform may generate or inject the required references. Manual HTML editing is more appropriate when you control the site template or framework directly.
What Genfavicon does not automatically configure
Generating files is only one part of website icon setup. The verified Genfavicon pages do not establish automatic configuration for a web app manifest, PWA icon declarations, Windows tile metadata, or a Safari pinned-tab mask icon. Add those separately if the project requires them, and verify that the downloaded package actually contains any format you intend to reference.

A missing or stale favicon is usually caused by a wrong path, a missing file, a competing CMS setting, or aggressive browser and CDN caching rather than by the image-generation step.
- Open the favicon URL directly, such as
https://example.com/favicon.ico. - Confirm that the file exists in the expected public directory and does not return a 404 or an HTML error page.
- Check the rendered page source and verify the filename, path, and link element.
- Test in a private or incognito window.
- Clear the browser cache and any CDN or reverse-proxy cache.
- If the deployment permits it, temporarily add a version query string such as
favicon.ico?v=2. - Check whether a CMS, framework, theme, or plugin is overriding the manually added tag.
Transparent PNGs can also appear to be missing when the artwork has little contrast against the browser’s tab or toolbar background. Test the icon in both light and dark browser interfaces and consider adding a suitable background to the source artwork.

Is Genfavicon private and safe for confidential artwork?
Genfavicon is not a local-only converter. Its About page says processing occurs on Genfavicon’s servers, while the About page and FAQ say workspaces are temporary and cleaned automatically. The FAQ also says uploaded files are not used to train AI models and are removed after the operational window.
Those statements describe temporary server-side handling, not a guarantee that the source image never leaves the computer. Genfavicon is reasonable for an ordinary public logo, but a confidential unreleased brand, client artwork under a strict no-upload agreement, or sensitive internal image should be processed with a browser-local or offline tool instead.
Do not describe Genfavicon broadly as “secure” or “fully private” based only on the temporary-workspace statements. Review the service’s current policies for requirements that exceed the claims published in the cited product pages.

According to the official FAQ, Genfavicon does not claim ownership of the generated output and permits commercial use, provided that the user has the necessary rights to the source artwork. Conversion does not grant permission to use a copyrighted logo, stock image, character, or trademark.
The practical rule is simple: use artwork that you or your client own, or artwork covered by a license that permits the intended website use. Genfavicon’s output policy does not replace copyright, licensing, or trademark clearance.
Does Genfavicon have a public API?
