The Geneva Chamber of Commerce hosted its annual Candidates’ Night in Geneva, Ohio, on October 4, 2023, ahead of the November election. Candidates discussed local races and ballot issues; the forum included introductions and audience-submitted questions, with the Geneva Area City Schools board race receiving the evening’s most extensive reported discussion.
How the Candidates’ Night forum worked
According to the Star Beacon report republished by Yahoo News on October 6, 2023, candidates in contested races had three minutes to introduce themselves before audience members submitted written questions for the moderator to put to all candidates. Candidates in uncontested races and advocates for ballot issues each had three minutes to speak.
School board candidates took on district issues
The report described the discussion with four Geneva Area City Schools board candidates as the night’s most extensive: G. Joseph Colucci, incumbent Sarah Fisher, Michele Krieg, and Brock Pierson. Topics included management and labor relations, staff departures, a permanent-improvement levy, Superintendent Terri Hrina-Treharn’s role, a possible athletic facility, and board-member training. The comments were candidate views voiced at a forum, not independent findings about district performance.
Colucci said he had taught in Conneaut Area City Schools for 34 years and spent 25 years on the union’s negotiating team; those are biographical claims reported from the event. He said, “I want to help eliminate the crisis of confidence the public has with the school board and superintendent.”

Krieg criticized district management, saying, “Perception is reality,” and, “the perception of the families in our district is this board and superintendent are not good managers, period.” Pierson framed the discussion around students: “Whether candidates or board members like each other isn’t the topic, how well the district serves its students is,” Pierson said.
Fisher said 26 resumes were considered in the superintendent hiring process. She also said she had heard a new athletic facility could cost $8–$10 million. These were her accounts at the event, not independently verified search figures or a confirmed project budget; the reported amount should not be treated as a current estimate.

Township topics included roads, fire services, and zoning
The report also covered remarks by Bob Alderman, a Harpersfield Township candidate; Adam Niewiadomski, a Trumbull Township trustee candidate; and Geneva Township trustee candidates Andrew Raymond and Bill Buskirk. Their comments addressed road conditions and grants, fire-department funding and contracting, updates to a township website and zoning map, and the value of continuity and local-government experience.
