A peer-reviewed case study on one farm in southern Ecuador found that some coffee plants grown from seeds sold as Sidra or Gesha did not match the expected identity when researchers assessed them with genetic markers and visible traits. The findings flag a practical risk for growers, but they do not show how often seed-identity discrepancies occur across Ecuador or the wider coffee trade.
What the Ecuador study found
The paper, “What you plant may not be what you bought: morphological and genetic discordance in specialty Coffea arabica L. cultivars from Ecuador,” was published in Frontiers in Plant Science on 8 August 2026 (DOI: 10.3389/fpls.2026.1868034). The findings summarized here are reported in a Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja-attributed release on EurekAlert!.
Researchers assessed four morphotypes—groups of plants distinguished by their observable forms—from plants grown from seed batches purchased as Sidra and Gesha. Two of the four matched the variety declared at purchase.
Sidra batch
One morphotype from the batch sold as Sidra had a genetic profile consistent with Batian, a Kenyan coffee variety outside the Ethiopian landrace group associated with Sidra.

Gesha batch
Plants from the batch sold as Gesha belonged to an Ethiopian landrace group, but they were not identical to the CATIE reference accession Geisha T.02722. That is a difference from a particular reference accession; it does not establish that the plants were simply “not Gesha.”
How identity was assessed
The team combined molecular-marker analysis with observations of plant morphology. The visible traits included plant architecture and the shape of leaves, branches, and fruit; internode length was among the traits noted as useful for distinguishing varieties.

| Evidence type | What it can show | What this report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Molecular markers | Genetic profile compared with reference material | The Sidra-batch morphotype was consistent with Batian; the Gesha-batch plants fell within an Ethiopian landrace group but differed from CATIE accession Geisha T.02722. |
| Morphology | Observable differences in plant form and structures | Visible traits helped distinguish the assessed morphotypes. The release does not give comparative accuracy estimates or a validated grower-facing identification protocol. |
The two evidence types address different aspects of identity: genetic markers examine a plant’s profile against references, while morphology records how it looks. The release does not identify a commercial laboratory, specify a certification standard, or provide a method growers can apply themselves.
Why the timing matters to growers
The planting material in the case lacked genetic or phytosanitary certification. Plants had grown for about three years before field differences prompted identity checks. The release says coffee plants can take three to four years to reach significant production, so a discrepancy may emerge only after years of establishment and care.

- INTENSITY AND ROAST: This full-bodied medium roast offers a bold and creamy finish
- BLEND: Made from Arabica and Robusta beans, this naturally caffeinated blend is sourced from 15 coffee-growing countries around the world
- PREPARATION: Ideal for espresso preparation.
- BREWING GUIDE FOR SINGLE ESPRESSO: 0.28 oz of ground espresso delivers a 1 oz espresso shot
That delay makes accurate identity information relevant when acquiring planting material: the value of a seed lot depends partly on whether the resulting plants are the varieties a grower intends to cultivate. The case does not establish a particular remedy or show that certification would have prevented this mismatch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this show coffee seed mislabeling is widespread?
No. The study involved a single farm and a limited number of plants, and its four-morphotype result is not a prevalence estimate for Ecuador or the global coffee industry. The UTPL-attributed release says the case highlights a need for identification tools and certification systems accessible to producers; it also points to examining more plants and farms and strengthening genetic and morphological references as next steps.

For growers, the report is a reason to treat variety identity as something that may need verification, not evidence that seed sellers generally mislabel varieties. It does not name a provider, certification program, or commercial service for checking coffee seed lots.
