Gemini is the Android Auto feature that can make common long-drive tasks easier to handle by voice: finding a place along your route, asking a follow-up question, getting help with a message, or checking information in connected apps. It is not available to every driver yet; Google says the integration is rolling out over time to eligible accounts and devices.
What Gemini can do during a drive
Gemini lets drivers make conversational requests instead of relying on memorized command phrases. Google describes the goal as making it possible to get more done by speaking naturally, without remembering specific phrases or pressing buttons on the screen. These are Google’s product examples, not independently tested results.
Find a place without leaving your route
You can ask Gemini to find a type of business along the way—for example, Google suggests asking it to “find some good taco places along the way.” You can then ask follow-up questions about a place, such as questions about reviews or common business details. For simpler category searches, Google Maps on Android Auto also supports searches for nearby options such as gas stations, parking garages, and coffee shops.

Google says Gemini can help with messages and can connect with services including Google Maps, YouTube Music, Spotify, and Calendar. One example from Google is asking about the location of a child’s soccer game listed in an email. Google’s May 13, 2025 announcement also described message editing and translation in over 40 languages; that is a stated capability, not a guarantee that every language or account has the same availability.

Keep the request brief
Voice interaction is the relevant convenience while driving; Gemini is not a reason to use your phone freely or type on the car display. Keep requests short and pay attention to driving conditions. Google’s documentation advises drivers to pay attention to the road and obey applicable laws.
Check whether Gemini is available in your Android Auto
Google describes Gemini’s arrival in Android Auto as a server-side transition that replaces the classic Google Assistant experience over time. There is no single date by which every Android Auto user should expect it. Availability depends on eligibility, including country, language, account, phone, and vehicle or device support.

Connect your phone to a compatible Android Auto vehicle. Google supports USB connections and wireless connections for compatible combinations; a cable is not required when wireless Android Auto is supported.

When eligible, invoke Gemini with “Hey Google” or the car’s steering-wheel voice button. Google also describes starting a more open conversation with “Hey Google, let’s talk.”
If Gemini does not appear, check that your phone, account, language, country, and vehicle are eligible, and allow for Google’s gradual rollout. Setting Gemini as the phone’s primary assistant does not by itself guarantee that the Android Auto integration is available.

Use navigation without typing while moving
Android Auto navigation can provide voice-guided directions, estimated arrival times, live traffic, and lane guidance through Google Maps or another supported navigation app. If you need to type a destination on the car display, the vehicle must be parked; use voice directions while driving rather than trying to enter text.

Choose a connection and voice control that fit your car

Google lists setup and compatibility details on its Android Auto product and setup page. A cable is an optional connection method, not a requirement for Gemini or for wireless Android Auto.
Use Google Maps reporting only when safe
On compatible displays, Google Maps lets drivers report traffic incidents or vote on reports. Signing in is required to report, and some incident categories are country-specific. Make a report only when it is safe to do so; otherwise, keep your attention on driving.
