Gemini for Home is no longer just a future upgrade: Google says early access has started in select countries and languages, with availability expanding over time. It can replace Google Assistant on eligible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays, but the rollout is staged—and once a home switches, Google says it cannot switch back.
When is Gemini coming to Google Home?
Google announced Gemini for Home in August 2025 and said the rollout to speakers and displays would begin toward the end of October 2025. Google’s current Help Center says early access has started in selected countries and languages and will reach more users over time. Households are notified in the Google Home app when the upgrade becomes available; not every owner will see it at once. Google’s rollout and availability details are subject to change.
Countries and languages currently listed
Google’s early-access list includes Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Listed languages are Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Spanish, and Swedish. Google says additional countries and languages will be added over time, and availability can still depend on the household.

Which Google speakers and displays are compatible?
Google says Gemini for Home works with Google Home and Nest speakers and displays released since 2016, though which features are available can differ by device. Its support information names these first-party products as compatible: Google Home Speaker (2026), Nest Hub (2nd generation), Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd generation), Nest Hub Max, Nest Hub (1st generation), and Google Home Mini (1st generation). The minimum firmware listed is Cast 3.76 for speakers and Fuchsia 28 for displays. Check Google’s live compatibility information for current model-level details, particularly for older devices or third-party products.

How to request early access
- Check your Google Groups settings and update the Google Home app.
- In the app, open Profile > Home settings > Early Access.
- Wait for an in-app notification that the upgrade is available. Open it to start setup.
Google says that after a home switches, all household members can use Gemini for Home on eligible devices in that home. The app’s labels or setup flow may change as the rollout continues.
Know what switching means before you opt in
Gemini for Home is an upgrade that replaces Google Assistant on the eligible speakers and displays in the home; it is not simply an extra assistant mode. Google states that once a home switches to Gemini for Home, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Consider that household-wide, one-way change before accepting the setup prompt. Google’s Help Center describes the switch and its consequences.

Is Gemini for Home free?
Google says core voice-assistant features are available at no cost. Examples include smart-home device control, media search and playback, alarms, timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, and answers to general questions. Some advanced capabilities require Google Home Premium instead; exact plan names and entitlements can change.

Google’s support page says Gemini Live requires a Google Home Premium Standard or Advanced plan. During a Live conversation, the speaker listens for up to 15 seconds after responding for a follow-up. Most speaker features cannot be used while the chat is underway, including smart-home commands inside the conversation. To end or interrupt the chat and control a device, say “Hey Google” and give a regular command. See Google’s Gemini Live support details for current plan eligibility and limitations.

Do you need the new Google Home Speaker?
No. Google describes the Google Home Speaker (2026) as its first audio device built for Gemini for Home, but its compatibility information also includes existing Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. The new speaker is an option for people who want new hardware, not a prerequisite for the assistant rollout.
Google announced the speaker on June 17, 2026, with a stated preorder price of $99.99 and shelves scheduled for June 25, 2026. Google says it supports multi-step natural conversation, has a physical microphone-mute toggle, and can pair with up to two speakers and a Google TV Streamer for spatial surround sound. These are Google’s announced specifications and capabilities, not independent performance-test results. Google’s speaker announcement has the product details.
