First, work out whether Gemini is down for many people or the problem is limited to your account, browser, or Chrome feature. Check Google’s live Workspace Status Dashboard before changing settings. If it shows no Gemini incident, check account access and browser support for the web app; if the problem is Gemini in Chrome, use its separate eligibility checks and fixes.

1. Check whether Google reports a Gemini incident

Open the Google Workspace Status Dashboard and look for Gemini. The dashboard lists current and past service status and recent disruptions. Its status is time-sensitive, so check it when the problem is happening rather than relying on an earlier snapshot.

At 6:21 AM UTC on October 9, 2026, the dashboard showed “No incidents.” That snapshot does not rule out an issue that started later, or every issue affecting the consumer Gemini app. If Google reports an incident, note the affected service and status updates; wait for Google’s resolution instead of repeatedly changing local settings.

Google’s status history illustrates why this check comes first: on September 11, 2026, from 6:00 to 13:22 PDT, some users had intermittent elevated error rates with Gemini 3.1 Pro on Gemini web and app. Google said preliminary analysis linked the incident to a recent rollout and that a code change mitigated it. 2. If the Gemini website is failing, check the browser and account

Use a supported browser

Google lists Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Edgium as supported browsers for gemini.google.com. If you are using another browser, try one of these before troubleshooting extensions or changing device settings. Google’s current browser guidance is in Gemini Apps Help.

Confirm which Google Account is signed in

Check that the browser is signed in to the account you intend to use. Access can depend on account type, age, location, and whether a school or work administrator has enabled Gemini. Google says personal accounts, eligible work accounts, and school accounts with institutional access may use the service; organization policies can restrict it. Family Link-managed accounts cannot access the Gemini web app.

Some Gemini web features may work while signed out, but signing in is needed for additional features and saved Gemini Apps activity. If sign-in shows “Something went wrong,” Google’s help page explains: “If you get a ‘Something went wrong’ message while trying to access or sign in to the Gemini web app, your account can’t access the app at the moment.” The issue may relate to location, age, account type, or temporary availability; follow any prompt to try again later. See Google’s sign-in requirements and Gemini Apps availability and access information.

3. If Gemini in Chrome is missing, treat it as a separate feature

Gemini in Chrome is not the same as the Gemini website. It has its own eligibility rules, and Google is rolling it out gradually, so an otherwise eligible user may not have access yet. Google’s requirements include a supported region; a Chromebook Plus, Mac, or Windows computer; the latest Chrome; a signed-in Chrome profile; a supported language; and meeting age requirements. Incognito and unsigned Chrome profiles are not supported. Some work or school accounts need administrator enablement. Check Google’s Gemini in Chrome availability and requirements.

Try Google’s Chrome-specific troubleshooting steps

  1. Restart Chrome. Close and reopen the browser, then check whether Gemini in Chrome appears or works.
  2. Check region detection. If you use a VPN and Gemini in Chrome seems unavailable in your location, disconnect the VPN and check again.
  3. Update Chrome. Install the latest available version, then restart the browser.
  4. Reset Chrome flags. Restore flags to their defaults and restart Chrome.
  5. Reload Gemini. Reload the Gemini side panel or floating chat.
  6. Close virtualized environments. Shut down virtual machines or similar environments and test again.
  7. Ask your administrator. If you use a managed work or school account, ask whether Gemini in Chrome is disabled by organization policy.

These steps are for Gemini in Chrome; they are not a general fix for an outage or a sign-in restriction on gemini.google.com.

4. Send feedback if the problem persists

If you can sign in to the Gemini web app, open gemini.google.com and select Settings & help > Send feedback. Describe what failed and include a screenshot if it helps explain the issue. Before sending, note Google’s privacy warning: the associated conversation, including prompts and Gemini responses, and files, images, or personal content obtained through Connected Apps may be collected with feedback. See Google’s instructions for sending feedback.
