Google’s February 5, 2025, headline about Gemini 2.0 being available to everyone referred mainly to an updated Gemini 2.0 Flash model reaching Gemini app users and becoming generally available to developers through the Gemini API. It did not mean every Gemini 2.0 model or feature was open to every user. As of October 4, 2026, Google lists the Gemini 2.0 Flash and Flash-Lite API endpoints as shut down on June 1, 2026, so the headline is historical—not a statement that those API models remain usable.

What “available to everyone” meant in February 2025

In its February 5, 2025 announcement, Google said an updated Gemini 2.0 Flash had reached all Gemini app users on desktop and mobile the previous week. Separately, Google made Flash generally available through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI, allowing developers to build production applications with it.

The broad wording described Flash’s rollout, not universal access to the entire Gemini 2.0 family. Google announced two other options with narrower access or a less mature release status:

Model at launch Who could access it Launch status and intended use Context window
Gemini 2.0 Flash Gemini app users on desktop and mobile; developers through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI Generally available via the API; positioned by Google as a fast, general-purpose “workhorse” model 1 million tokens, according to Google’s 2025 specifications
Gemini 2.0 Pro Experimental Developers through Google AI Studio and Vertex AI; Gemini Advanced users in the app Experimental; Google positioned it for coding and complex prompts 2 million tokens, according to Google’s 2025 specifications
Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite Developers Public preview; Google described it as cost-efficient for high-volume use 1 million tokens, according to Google’s 2025 announcement

These are launch-era descriptions, not a current buying guide. Google’s specifications and characterizations are vendor statements, not independent benchmark results. The available sources do not establish current Gemini app availability by country or subscription.

Was Gemini 2.0 Pro available to everyone?

No. At launch, Pro Experimental was limited to developers and Gemini Advanced users. Google’s CTO of Google DeepMind, Koray Kavukcuoglu, described it as having the “strongest coding performance” and ability to handle complex prompts among models Google had released at the time. That was Google’s February 2025 assessment, not an independently verified ranking.

The “Experimental” label also mattered: Pro was not the same broad, generally available release as Flash. Its larger context window and coding focus did not make it the model behind the “available to everyone” wording.

Did everyone get Gemini 2.0’s image, audio, and tool features?

Not necessarily. Google’s December 2024 introduction of the Gemini 2.0 family discussed advances including native image and audio output and tool use such as Google Search and Maps. But the February 2025 rollout announcement qualified what was available at release: the models would have multimodal input with text output, while additional modalities were expected to become generally available in the following months.

That staged rollout means the family’s broader capabilities should not be confused with features available to every user in every Gemini app or API surface on February 5. Google’s February announcement does not establish that all users could then access native image generation, audio output, or every tool integration.

Can you still use Gemini 2.0 Flash or Flash-Lite?

Not through the Gemini API endpoints named in Google’s lifecycle documentation. Google’s API changelog records that these endpoints were shut down on June 1, 2026: gemini-2.0-flash, gemini-2.0-flash-001, gemini-2.0-flash-lite, and gemini-2.0-flash-lite-001. Google’s deprecations page lists gemini-3.6-flash as the replacement for Flash and gemini-3.1-flash-lite for Flash-Lite. Check Google’s Gemini API changelog and deprecations information for lifecycle details before changing an application.

This shutdown applies to the documented API endpoints; it does not, by itself, establish whether a Gemini 2.0 option remains in Google’s consumer app. The available information here also does not confirm current app access, country-level availability, or current subscription requirements. Do not infer that an API replacement is automatically available in the same app surface or under the same terms.

What did Google say Gemini 2.0 could do?

Google framed the family as a move toward more multimodal, agent-like systems. At the February 2025 rollout, it described Flash as a fast workhorse, Pro Experimental as suited to coding and complex prompts, and Flash-Lite as a cost-efficient option for developers. Those are Google’s product descriptions rather than third-party comparative findings.

For Flash-Lite, Google gave an illustrative cost example: captioning around 40,000 unique photos could cost less than one dollar in Google AI Studio’s paid tier. This was a vendor example for that stated workload and tier, not a general price guarantee for other inputs, usage patterns, or dates.

What to take from the headline now

Read “Gemini 2.0 is now available to everyone” as a February 2025 account of Flash’s broad app rollout and API general availability—not as a promise that every model and modality was open to all users. By October 2026, the named Flash and Flash-Lite API endpoints had been shut down, and Google documented newer API replacements. The historical announcement does not establish today’s Gemini app access or plan pricing.
