Gears Tactics is worth considering if you want aggressive, turn-based squad combat, flexible character builds, and the forceful presentation of Gears of War. Its biggest drawback is the campaign around those battles: several reviewers report that required side missions and repeated objective structures slow the story, especially later on. It is a better fit for players who value tactical encounters over extensive between-mission strategy or consistently varied missions.

What is Gears Tactics?

Microsoft describes Gears Tactics as a single-player, turn-based strategy game set 12 years before the first Gears of War. You command Gabe Diaz, build and equip a squad, and fight the Locust threat. Xbox credits Splash Damage and The Coalition as developers and Xbox Game Studios as publisher.

The campaign is linear rather than built around a broad strategic map. That keeps the focus on battles, but means players looking for a sandbox-style campaign or substantial management between missions may find less to do outside combat.

What works well

Combat creates satisfying action chains

Turns revolve around action points, cover, overwatch, class abilities, and executions. GameSpot praises how these systems translate the series’ combat into a strategy RPG, while PC Gamer highlights abilities that reward coordinated squad roles. A turn can build from positioning and attacks into a momentum swing when the team’s skills and actions fit together.

Classes and character builds give the squad identity

PC Gamer describes five classes, each with distinct skills, and GameSpot praises the progression and customization. Developing complementary roles gives players room to shape a squad around their preferred tactics rather than treating every soldier as interchangeable.

The Gears presentation carries into a new genre

GameSpot says the game captures the shooter series’ chaotic energy, and The Guardian praises its spectacle and aggressive pace. Those are reviewer judgments, but they point to a clear strength: the tactical format still feels rooted in Gears rather than like a generic strategy game with the series’ name attached.

Boss encounters and Jack add tactical variety

Boss battles bring spectacle and a different scale of threat, though their length is a caveat discussed below. Microsoft’s November 10, 2020 update announcement added Jack as a playable character with over 20 skills, along with Deviant enemies and Supreme equipment. Jack’s abilities offer another set of tactical choices to build around.

What may frustrate players

Mission structures can feel repetitive

GameSpot, PC Gamer, PCGamesN, and The Guardian all identify limited mission variety or recurring mission structures as a weakness. This is the most consistent criticism across those reviews. If you need objectives to change substantially from mission to mission, the campaign may wear thin even when an individual battle is enjoyable.

Required side missions interrupt the story

PC Gamer and The Guardian describe side missions as mandatory gates between story missions, particularly in later acts; PCGamesN also says the story pauses for several side missions. Players who want to follow the plot without detours may find that structure slows their progress.

There is little strategic management outside battles

PC Gamer notes the absence of a world map, research system, or broader outside-combat gameplay system. The Guardian likewise contrasts the game with tactics titles that offer a more developed strategic layer. This simpler structure keeps attention on combat, but offers less campaign planning and management for players who enjoy those systems.

Some bosses and loot management can drag

PC Gamer criticizes boss fights that reuse similar mechanics and have large health pools, while GameSpot describes the trio of boss battles as long endurance runs. PC Gamer also finds sorting similar loot less appealing later in the campaign. These are individual review assessments, not a guarantee that every player will have the same experience.

The story may not carry the game for everyone

GameSpot calls the plot simple and largely detached from the larger saga; PC Gamer describes parts of the narrative as thin. That does not mean the story is universally judged poor, but the reviews suggest the strongest reason to play is the combat rather than a major new chapter in Gears’ broader narrative.

Is Gears Tactics like XCOM?

It shares the broad appeal of turn-based squad tactics, including positioning, cover, classes, and coordinated abilities. The key distinction in the reviews is campaign scope: The Guardian and PC Gamer describe Gears Tactics as lacking the kind of broader strategic layer associated with games such as XCOM. Expect a more direct, linear campaign centered on tactical encounters, not a comparable map-driven management experience.

Platforms, controls, and access

The US Xbox store listing identifies PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It classifies the game as single-player and lists PC gamepad support, Smart Delivery, Xbox Play Anywhere, 4K Ultra HD, HDR10, variable refresh rate, and 60 fps+. These are storefront feature claims; hardware, region, and service availability can affect what applies to an individual player. Microsoft’s November 10, 2020 update also describes enhanced controller support, keyboard remapping, and camera and UI settings.

A controller is optional: the official listing supports PC gamepads, but does not make a particular controller necessary or identify one as best. The Xbox US listing displayed a $29.99 purchase price and subscription listings when checked on October 7, 2026; storefront prices, cloud access, and subscription inclusion can change, so check the listing for your region before buying.

Who should play Gears Tactics?

  • Good fit: Players who want tactical battles with action-point chains, distinct classes, and squad-build flexibility, presented with Gears’ aggressive style.
  • Less suitable: Players who prioritize varied objectives, optional rather than required side content, extensive campaign management, or consistently brisk story pacing.
  • Story-first players: Consider whether the Gears setting and characters are enough to draw you in; the reviewed strengths are more consistently about combat than the plot.

How long does the campaign take?

There is no representative completion-time figure established by these reviews. PC Gamer’s Wes Fenlon reported taking “25 hours or so” to finish his campaign, while GameSpot’s Mike Epstein reported a run of more than 35 hours. Those are two reviewers’ individual experiences, not a typical-time estimate; mission pace and play style can differ.

Verdict

Gears Tactics is a strong choice for players who want a Gears-flavored tactical game and are happy to spend most of a linear single-player campaign in combat. Its flexible squad builds and forceful encounters are the draw. The trade-off is a campaign that reviewers repeatedly describe as repetitive, with required side missions and limited strategic management outside battles. Choose it for the fights; be cautious if variety and campaign-layer depth matter just as much.
