Gears of War: Reloaded is worth considering if you want to play the original game on a current platform, especially with friends on different systems. It packages the original campaign and post-launch content with updated presentation and cross-platform play. Its main drawback is that it remains a remaster of a 2006 game: the campaign and multiplayer retain much of the original design, so returning players should not expect a substantially new experience.
What Gears of War: Reloaded includes
Reloaded remasters the original Gears of War; it is not a new sequel or a newly designed campaign. Xbox says the package brings together the breadth of content from Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, including the original game’s post-launch additions: a bonus campaign act, multiplayer maps and modes, and classic characters and cosmetics. Xbox’s launch announcement and its official franchise page describe the release and its included content.
It launched on August 26, 2025, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5, and Steam. The PS5 release marked the franchise’s PlayStation console debut. Xbox announced a $39.99 suggested retail price at launch and listed PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate availability then; neither figure nor subscription catalog listing establishes today’s price or access. Check the relevant store or subscription catalog before buying.

The strongest reasons to play
Play with friends across platforms
Cross-play supports two-player co-op campaign and Versus Multiplayer parties of up to eight, according to Xbox. Every party member must sign in to a Microsoft account. The official sources also describe cross-progression for campaign saves and multiplayer progress. That means progress can carry across platforms, not that a game purchase or entitlement transfers between stores. Check the current account requirements on the platform you use before arranging a session. Xbox’s launch details and the franchise page cover these features.

Updated presentation and platform-specific features
Xbox describes 4K assets, remastered textures, lighting, shadows and reflections, plus HDR, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos support. It lists multiplayer performance of up to 120 FPS on supported configurations. Those are feature limits, not a guarantee that every device, display or setup will provide every visual or audio feature. See the Xbox product listing for its platform-specific details.
PS5 has its own DualSense features, including haptics, speaker support and adaptive triggers, as listed on the PlayStation product page. The Steam listing names ultrawide support, a benchmark mode, variable refresh rate, mouse and keyboard controls, controller remapping, FSR 3.1 and DLSS 3.5 Super Resolution. Check Steam’s current listing and your PC’s hardware against its live requirements before purchase.

A campaign that can still work well with a friend
Push Square found the single-player campaign enjoyable and praised the multiplayer, while noting that the campaign can be played with a friend. That is a reviewer’s assessment rather than a promise that the pacing or combat will suit every player. Read Push Square’s review for its full perspective.
What may put you off
The remaster does not erase the original game’s age
The updated visuals and performance do not amount to a ground-up redesign. TechRadar says the original game’s 2006-era feel remains apparent and that multiplayer largely plays the same; Push Square also points to dated design. These are critical judgments about how the game feels, not publisher-stated technical defects. If you are new to the series, that older design may be part of the appeal; if you expect modernized mechanics throughout, it may be a limitation. TechRadar’s review and Push Square’s review discuss those trade-offs.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
Less compelling for recent players
Because the release is a remaster and its documented additions focus on presentation, platform support and included content, it may offer less value to someone who recently played the original or Ultimate Edition and wants a substantially different campaign. That is a practical judgment based on the release’s scope, not a claim that every returning player will find it redundant.
Accessibility features may not meet every need
PlayStation lists 15 accessibility features, but its product page says subtitles cover the main story and main characters only. Windows Central describes options such as changing certain button-mashing actions to button holds, while TechRadar characterizes the overall accessibility suite as basic, mentioning subtitles and text-to-speech. If a specific accommodation matters to you, inspect the current in-game settings and the relevant platform’s feature details rather than relying on a general accessibility label. PlayStation’s feature list, Windows Central’s review and TechRadar’s review provide further detail.

- Listen up, soldier. The world is in ruin. The Locust Horde has risen. It’s Human vs Horde, and here’s your mission: Pick a side, build a powerful deck, and win the war. The fate of the world is in your hands!
- Experience the gritty gunplay of the video game in this official two-player card game. Take command of the COG forces or the Locust horde and seize control of the battlefield, one chapter at a time.
- Strategise your way through each chapter, bolstering your forces with classic characters like Marcus Fenix, General Raam, August “Cole Train” Cole, Dominic Santiago, and Damon Baird.
- Every battle counts. Whatever happens in each chapter will change what comes next, so you’d better be ready to dominate. The deck you build and decisions you make will change the way you play each campaign, making this a game you can reload time and time again.
- Whether you're a hardened vet or a grass-green rookie, get ready to take cover and lay down suppressive fire. Your enemies are trying to take the line, soldier. You’d better shove back hard.

| Playing on Xbox Series X|S | Xbox lists updated visual and audio features and multiplayer up to 120 FPS on supported configurations. Actual feature support depends on hardware and setup. |
| Playing on PC | Steam lists ultrawide, benchmark mode, variable refresh rate, mouse and keyboard, remapping, FSR 3.1 and DLSS 3.5 Super Resolution. Check the live requirements and your system’s compatibility. |
