There is no proven overall “best” gun in Gears of War: E-Day: the official sources describe weapon roles and selected beta balance changes, but do not publish a full set of comparable weapon stats or independent test results. Choose by the job you want a weapon to do—close-range pressure, precision, flexible rifle fire, recoil-heavy aggression, quick cleanup, or attacks around cover—and account for whether you are playing Versus or a mode with weapon mods.
Compare weapons by the role you want to play
The descriptions below are developer guidance, not a ranked tier list. They can help you identify a weapon’s intended feel, but they do not establish exact damage, effective range, recoil values, or time to kill.
| Playstyle | Weapons to consider | Why they may fit | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close-range pressure | Gnasher, Incinerator, Lancer MK1 (Retro) | Xbox Wire calls the Gnasher the close-range king. The Incinerator is an Imulsion-fueled shotgun described as melting enemies on contact. The Lancer MK1 is described as deadly up close. | The Lancer MK1 has strong recoil. These descriptions do not quantify range, damage, or which weapon is superior. Xbox Wire’s campaign weapon overview. |
| Precision at distance | Longshot, Breechshot | The Longshot rewards patience and precision. The Breechshot is described as returning with a one-shot headshot kill in PvP. | No comparable accuracy, scope-sway, or weapon-specific damage table is provided. The Breechshot’s stated headshot result is not a general damage comparison. Xbox Wire’s campaign weapon overview. |
| Flexible rifle fire | Prototype Lancer, Hammerburst | The Prototype Lancer is described as an all-round rifle with a higher rate of fire and deeper magazine than recent Lancers. The Hammerburst fires an accurate six-round burst, and a perfect active reload increases its rate of fire. | Multiplayer damage values were later adjusted in the September 30 beta update, so role descriptions should not be treated as final balance rankings. September 30 beta tuning notes. |
| Recoil mastery and aggressive rifle play | Lancer MK1 (Retro) | The Coalition says it is deadly at close range and can work at mid-to-long range if the player controls its recoil. | This is a qualitative design description, not a measured performance result. Xbox Wire’s campaign weapon overview. |
| Quick draw or cleanup | Snub | Its official description emphasizes quick drawing and stowing, and firing as fast as the trigger can be pulled, making it suited to finishing an opponent or switching quickly. | The September 30 multiplayer beta update reduced its rate of fire. September 30 beta tuning notes. |
| Pressure enemies behind cover | Gut Puncher | Its armor-piercing explosive rounds can be detonated by the player: fire quickly, or hold the shot and place it behind enemy cover. | The September 30 beta update reduced spare ammunition. Xbox Wire’s campaign weapon overview; September 30 beta tuning notes. |
How E-Day’s gunplay changes what feels comfortable
Weapon choice is also a handling choice. The Coalition’s July 31 gameplay update says projectiles use simulated ballistics and travel time. At a distance, you may need to lead a moving target rather than aim at its current position. Aiming also supports shoulder-swapping, while first-person scopes have sway. Some automatic weapons reward short bursts instead of holding the trigger.

- For scoped precision: Account for scope sway rather than expecting a perfectly still sight picture.
- For automatic fire: Recoil management and burst timing matter, particularly with the Lancer MK1.
The update describes the Gnasher and Breechshot as having round-by-round active reloads. You can load one or two rounds without waiting for a complete reload; the Gnasher capacity is six shells, down from eight in the earlier configuration described by the update. In the Official Xbox Podcast, The Coalition Studio Creative Director Matt Searcy explained the trade-off: “So you can see each shell load in the Active Reload bar. And actually, you can interrupt your reload to fire a shell immediately and basically trade off having a smaller clip to get your shot out at a time of urgency if you need it.” (Official Xbox Podcast transcript, published June 9, 2026.)

Pick for the mode you are playing
Mode rules change how much a weapon build can be tailored. The official multiplayer overview describes Horde Siege as a 12-player mode with class progression and weapon mods. Unlocking mods involves Weapon Parts, and keeping collected parts in a mission requires a successful squad extraction.
Versus works differently: everyone starts a match with the same loadout weapons and equipment, and weapon mods are absent. In Versus, compare weapons by their built-in role and handling; save mod-specific decisions for Campaign or Horde Siege. The Coalition’s multiplayer deep dive.

Read balance notes separately from weapon roles
The September 30, 2026 beta update reports these multiplayer adjustments: Prototype Lancer damage was moved to a value between the first and second beta weekends; Lancer MK1 and Vulcan damage were reduced; Hammerburst damage was increased; Gnasher ADS damage at range was increased and hipfire consistency improved; Snub rate of fire was reduced; and Gut Puncher spare ammunition was reduced. The update also says E-Day retains camera-oriented Gnasher aiming while aiming down sights and uses a hybrid camera-and-muzzle check for hipfire. These are dated beta tuning notes, not a promise that values will remain unchanged in the released game.

What the comparison cannot establish
The official sources reviewed do not provide a complete, weapon-by-weapon table of damage, range, recoil, accuracy, or time to kill, and they do not establish an overall winner through independent testing. Treat role labels as guidance about intended use, not proof that one gun will outperform another in every encounter.
