As of October 3, 2026, early reviews of Gears of War: E-Day lean positive, but the picture is incomplete and critics disagree about the campaign. Separately, Eurogamer reports that anonymous employees at The Coalition fear further layoffs and worry about a review-score bonus; Microsoft has not announced a new studio-wide layoff plan.
Is Gears of War: E-Day getting good reviews?
Broadly, yes: most scored reviews counted in GamesRadar+’s October 3 snapshot were rated Positive by Metacritic, though three were Mixed. That is an early snapshot, not a settled consensus; GamesRadar+ noted that several outlets had not yet published scored reviews. The reports do not establish a reliable final aggregate score.

What reviewers like—and what they criticize
Tom’s Guide praised the cover-based combat, presentation, and return of Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. Its review also noted that some battle banter becomes repetitive. The Guardian likewise praised the combat, but found the wider campaign repetitive and disappointing. Together, the reviews suggest a divide between appreciation for the core fighting and reservations about how the campaign sustains it.

Why are Coalition developers worried about layoffs?
Eurogamer reported on October 1 that multiple anonymous sources at The Coalition’s Vancouver studio feared further cuts after a new round of Xbox layoffs and the departure of story director Juan Vaca. The sources described a shift from earlier confidence in the studio’s position to uncertainty about what might happen after the game’s release. Those comments describe employees’ reported fears, not a confirmed Microsoft plan to cut The Coalition or its entire staff.
Vaca’s departure is a separate, reported layoff: PC Gamer said on September 27 that Vaca stated on LinkedIn that he was part of a Microsoft layoff round. That individual account does not establish that additional Coalition employees have been laid off.

Eurogamer said Xbox declined to comment on the record about its reporting. The article also discussed wider Xbox reductions, but those broader figures should not be read as a Coalition headcount.

Could layoffs affect the reported review-score bonus?
According to Eurogamer, which said it verified an internal email, a Metacritic-linked bonus was expected to be paid near the end of October and required recipients to be full-time employees at payout. Employees reportedly worried that a layoff before that date could affect eligibility.

Eurogamer said it was unclear whether current staff laid off before payment would receive the bonus. The report separately said recently affected staff such as Vaca were understood to remain eligible if the targets were met. These are details attributed to Eurogamer’s reporting on an internal email, not a public bonus policy independently confirmed by Microsoft.
