The early campaign reviews point to a confident return to the series’ cover-based action, with praise for combat, presentation, and the prequel’s character-focused setup. That positive direction is not a unanimous verdict: some reviewers object to repetition, pacing, or story choices.

In an October 2, 2026 roundup, Windows Central reported scores of 88 on Metacritic and 87 on OpenCritic. Those are publication-time snapshots relayed by Windows Central, not live figures independently verified here, and they reflect campaign reviews rather than multiplayer coverage. Pure Xbox’s roundup also includes 10/10 ratings from Pure Xbox, Day One, and The Outhaven, plus 9/10 from IGN; that is a selection of reviews, not a complete census.

Reviewers who like the campaign point to its shooting and the way the prequel revisits the series’ core identity. Tom’s Guide calls it the best entry since Gears of War 3, while GamesRadar’s review-in-progress praises the campaign and its naturalized cover system. IGN’s assessment, reproduced in Windows Central’s roundup, describes “a heartfelt prequel with strong characters even when we know how it ends.” These are individual critical judgments, not claims of universal agreement.

Where the dissent lies
The Guardian provides a clear counterpoint. Kirk McKeand praises the combat but argues that the experience around it is repetitive and disappointing, summarizing: “E-Day boasts the best combat in 20 years of Gears games – but everything surrounding it is disappointing”. That split matters if you value pacing and variety as much as gunplay: excellent combat does not, by itself, mean every part of the campaign works equally well.
Are these reviews a verdict on multiplayer?
No. The reviews cited here primarily assess the single-player campaign. Windows Central said multiplayer modes were unavailable during its review period, and GamesRadar labeled its coverage review-in-progress pending multiplayer elements. Treat the early aggregate scores as campaign-focused reception, not a finished judgment on the full multiplayer offering.

What is E-Day about?
Xbox describes Gears of War: E-Day as a prequel set fourteen years before the original game. It follows young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the opening days of the Locust invasion. The premise gives the series room to revisit familiar characters at an earlier point in their lives, while the reviews suggest the campaign’s main draw is still its moment-to-moment action.

When does Gears of War: E-Day release?
Xbox lists October 6, 2026 as the general release date. Premium Edition owners received up to five days of early access starting October 1, and the official Gears page lists October 1 as the Collector’s Edition launch date. These are distinct early-access and general-release timings, not competing release dates.

What platforms and access options are available?
Xbox lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Steam. It is included day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. An Xbox Store purchase also supports Xbox Play Anywhere across Xbox Series X|S and PC, which is useful if you want to move between those two platforms under the applicable Xbox account.

Xbox’s US page lists Standard at $69.99 and Premium at $99.99; Premium is a $30 upgrade from Standard. Regional pricing and availability can differ. Standard is offered physically as well as digitally, while Premium is digital. The added value in Premium is early access and digital extras, not a different campaign according to the available edition information.
