Gears of War: E-Day has excellent cover-shooter combat, but PC Gamer’s review-in-progress says its campaign stretches that combat too thin. Other critics are more positive about the single-player experience, so the pacing complaint is one review’s judgment—not a settled consensus. Multiplayer also remained unassessed in the cited review-in-progress coverage, leaving a full-game verdict pending.
What is Gears of War: E-Day?
Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person cover shooter developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios. Xbox describes it as an origin story set 14 years before the original Gears of War, following Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as the Locust Horde begins its invasion. Tom’s Guide identifies Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes as members of Bravo Squad. Windows Central characterizes the story’s tone as horror, war, survival, and desperation, with the invasion’s impact on civilians part of its focus.

Xbox’s official product page lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Steam, along with Game Pass availability and Xbox Play Anywhere. Xbox says cloud gaming is available through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW; eligibility and subscription terms depend on the service and region.
How does the combat play?
The shooting is the most consistently praised part of the reviews covered here. The Coalition says it built E-Day from scratch while keeping the series’ cover-shooter identity. In its official gameplay update, the studio describes movement between cover as central, with more cover heights, types, and actions than before. It also says projectile ballistics are simulated, meaning players may need to lead moving targets at range.

Windows Central reports faster sprinting, vaulting, and climbing, plus more dynamic use of low cover. PC Gamer’s assessment is that combat on Hardcore can reward repeatedly seeking better ground. Those are reviewers’ impressions rather than a promise that every encounter or difficulty plays the same way.
Where critics see friction
Windows Central says some large enemies can feel like bullet sponges and questions whether the world’s open-but-not-actually-open structure works. PC Gamer’s broader complaint is campaign pacing: it likes the shooting but considers the campaign overstretched. These criticisms concern encounter feedback and structure, not the basic appeal of the cover-shooter mechanics.

Why do reviews disagree about the campaign?
The reviews are judging different aspects of a long campaign, and they do not reach the same verdict. GamesRadar+’s Andrew Brown reports a satisfying single-player experience, while Tom’s Guide calls E-Day an excellent series entry. Windows Central praises the presentation and mobility but raises concerns about structure and large-enemy fights. PC Gamer’s review-in-progress emphasizes that the campaign becomes a slog despite its strong shooting.
GamesRadar+ reviewer Andrew Brown says he completed the five-act campaign in 16 hours, including most side objectives. That is one reviewer’s reported playthrough, not an official duration or a guarantee of how long another player will take.

Is this a complete review of the whole game?
No. PC Gamer says multiplayer was unavailable before release and leaves its review unscored. GamesRadar+ also reserves its complete score until its reviewer returns to assess multiplayer, although it gives a positive single-player verdict. Treat those articles as campaign-focused assessments in progress, not final judgments on every mode.
The available reactions are therefore useful for understanding the campaign’s combat, pacing, and structure, but they do not establish a critic consensus or a finished multiplayer verdict.

According to Xbox’s launch announcement, early access began worldwide on 1 October 2026 for Premium Edition players and Game Pass subscribers with the Premium Upgrade; the worldwide launch is 6 October 2026. The announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, and Steam, and names Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW for cloud gaming. Check the relevant store or service for availability and terms in your region.
The practical choice is between playing locally on a listed console or PC, using subscription access where available, or streaming through a supported cloud service. If a physical copy or collectibles matter to you, Xbox’s Collector’s Edition announcement describes a package with the Xbox Series X Premium Edition on disc and physical items, including a 15-inch statue. Xbox also identifies The Art and Making of Gears of War: E-Day as an official companion book and mentions a Limited Edition Xbox Wireless Controller in its launch announcement.
