Gears of War: E-Day had a Metacritic score of 87–88 in GamesRadar’s 2026 reports, putting it ahead of Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 in that outlet’s comparison—but below the original trilogy. Separately, E-Day story director Juan Vaca said he was part of a Microsoft layoff round. Reports of wider staff anxiety are concerns, not confirmation of another studio-wide layoff or a decision to withhold bonuses.
What is Gears of War: E-Day’s Metacritic score?
GamesRadar reported an 88 Metacritic score from 50 critic reviews in one 2026 article. A related GamesRadar report listed the game at 87, showing that the aggregate changed between reports. Treat either figure as a dated snapshot rather than a permanent score. GamesRadar’s score report and its related report provide the respective figures.
In GamesRadar’s comparison, E-Day’s reported 87–88 was higher than the scores for The Coalition’s two previous mainline entries, but lower than each of the first three Gears games:

That makes E-Day The Coalition’s highest-scoring Gears entry in GamesRadar’s reported comparison, not the highest-scoring Gears game overall. Metacritic aggregates critics’ reviews; it does not establish that every player will enjoy the game, and a score alone does not show which modes reviewers assessed.

Did E-Day developers lose their jobs?
PC Gamer reported on September 27, 2026, that E-Day story director Juan Vaca publicly said he was part of a Microsoft layoff round. His LinkedIn post, quoted by PC Gamer, said: “I am part of this round of Microsoft layoffs and am open to new opportunities in games/film/tv.” Vaca also wrote, “If your team needs a director/storyteller please reach out.” PC Gamer’s report says The Coalition was not named in Microsoft gaming chief Matt Booty’s “Continuing Our Reset” blog post. Vaca’s statement establishes his reported departure; it does not establish how many other Coalition employees, if any, were affected.
Are Coalition staff worried about more layoffs or lost bonuses?
GamesRadar, summarizing Eurogamer reporting, said some Coalition staff feared further layoffs and worried that people dismissed before payouts might miss performance-related bonuses. Those accounts describe employee concerns, including anonymous-source reporting; they are not proof Microsoft had decided on another Coalition layoff round or planned to withhold bonuses. What do reviews say, and what has been assessed?
GamesRadar’s review was still in progress while the reviewer awaited multiplayer access for full testing. Reviewer Andy Brown said he spent 16 hours completing the campaign on PC using a publisher-provided code; that is his reported playtime, not a general estimate of how long the campaign takes. GamesRadar describes the campaign as playable by one to four players.

When does E-Day launch, and where can you play it?
In an Xbox Wire announcement dated September 17, 2026, The Coalition studio head Mike Crump said the game had gone gold. Xbox Wire listed early access for October 1 and worldwide launch for October 6, 2026. The announced platforms were Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC/Windows PC, and Steam; the post also named Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass availability.
