In Gears of War: E-Day, “icon” and “emblem” refer to different multiplayer customization elements: an icon is also used to mark enemies or objects, while an emblem is the background behind your player name. The Crimson Omen is the franchise symbol shown in the game’s E-Day imagery; official material describes its appearance but does not give it a separate in-universe origin story.
What do icons mean in Gears of War: E-Day?
In multiplayer, an icon is a simple, single-color graphic with two uses: it appears above your player emblem in lobbies, and the icon you equip is also displayed when you mark an enemy or object. That means your selected icon is not just decorative player-profile art; it is also the mark other players can see during multiplayer play. The Coalition’s multiplayer overview defines these uses.

The overview describes multiplayer customization broadly, but it does not publish a complete glossary explaining the lore behind every individual icon, banner, or emblem. A mark’s appearance alone is not evidence of a specific story meaning. Treat a particular symbol as identified only when its in-game label or an official source names it.

What is the difference between an icon, emblem, and title?
These are separate layers of a multiplayer player identity display, not interchangeable names for the same symbol.

These definitions come from The Coalition’s multiplayer overview. It also says challenges unlock customization such as poses, weapon-skin sets, banners, emblems, icons, and base characters. The overview reports more than 60 character skins at launch and four menu-music pieces at launch; those figures describe customization options, not a count of lore symbols.
What does the Crimson Omen mean?
The Crimson Omen is a recognizable Gears of War franchise mark. In its E-Day controller announcement, Xbox describes a design inspired by the E-holes—craters where the Locust emerge—that scar the world. The controller’s cracked, laser-etched surface reveals the Crimson Omen beneath the erupting ground. This imagery connects the franchise mark to the catastrophe of Emergence Day.

The announcement describes the visual design; it does not give the Crimson Omen a separate in-universe etymology. So the supported reading is that it is the franchise emblem revealed through E-Day’s devastation, not that the announcement establishes a new story explanation for the symbol.

E-Day means Emergence Day, the invasion event in which the Locust Horde erupts from beneath the planet Sera. Xbox’s official game synopsis places Gears of War: E-Day fourteen years before the original Gears of War and follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they face the Locust’s emergence. The title names the foundational event around which the game’s story and imagery are built.

What does the COG oath inscription mean?
Xbox Wire identifies “I shall hold my place in the machine.” as a line from the COG oath in its Collector’s Edition announcement. In context, the words express duty, order, and the expectation that each person holds their assigned position within the Coalition of Ordered Governments.

How should you interpret an individual icon or emblem?
- Use the in-game name or an official description when explaining a specific design.
- Separate a confirmed multiplayer function—such as marking an enemy or object—from a claimed story meaning.
- If no official source identifies a symbol, describe what is visibly shown without assigning it hidden lore.
