Gears of War: E-Day launches worldwide on October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass include it at launch; buying Premium is the route for up to five days of early access and its digital extras. The game is a prequel about young Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the first days of the Locust invasion.
When does Gears of War: E-Day release?
The worldwide launch date is October 6, 2026. Premium Edition buyers and players with the Premium Upgrade received early access beginning October 1, up to five days before the general launch. As of October 3, early access was underway and the worldwide launch date was still ahead.

Xbox announced that the game had gone gold on September 17, 2026, a development milestone ahead of launch. That status is not a review or a guarantee about performance on any particular system.
What is Gears of War: E-Day about?
The story is set 14 years before the original Gears of War and follows younger Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago on Sera during the opening days of the Locust invasion. “E-Day” means Emergence Day: the point when the Locust Horde erupts from beneath the planet and begins attacking humanity. The Coalition describes the game as an origin story focused on the invasion and the beginning of Marcus and Dom’s bond.

The Coalition’s June 2024 interview frames the project around the series’ identity, including brotherhood and its third-person cover-action gameplay. In a July 2026 gameplay update, the studio said it rebuilt the cover systems and unified the gameplay sandbox across modes. Those are developer descriptions, not independent assessments of how the game performs or feels in play.
Which platforms can you play it on?
The listed platforms are Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC through Microsoft Store/Xbox on PC, and Steam. Xbox Play Anywhere supports shared progression and achievements between Xbox and PC for supported purchases. Xbox also announced cloud access through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW; service availability, subscriptions, and supported regions can vary, so confirm current terms with the provider.

If you want to switch between console and PC, check the purchase storefront before buying: Play Anywhere is relevant to Xbox and Microsoft Store/Xbox PC access, while Steam is a separate platform listing. The sources identify Steam as a supported platform but do not establish that a Steam purchase participates in Play Anywhere.

What modes are included?
- Campaign: Play solo, or cooperate online with up to four players.
- Console split-screen: Two-player split-screen co-op is listed for console.
- Horde Siege: A player-versus-environment mode.
- Versus: Player-versus-player multiplayer.
The official Xbox product page describes these modes. It does not specify in the cited listing whether every mode supports the same party size or cross-platform arrangements, so check current in-game or official mode details if a particular setup matters to you.

Compare the live price in your region before purchasing. Premium’s early access had already started by October 3, so buying it after that point does not recover the days that have passed.
Is Premium worth the extra cost?
On the checked US Xbox listing, Premium costs $30 more than Standard, and the listed Premium Upgrade for Standard owners costs $30. Choose it if early access and the weapon pack, seasonal customization packs, and Iron are worth that difference to you. If you mainly want the campaign and modes without those additions, Standard or eligible Game Pass access avoids paying specifically for Premium content.

Game Pass is not the same as owning the game outright: access depends on an active qualifying subscription and current catalog terms. If you expect to play through a subscription, check that it is available to you and compare its ongoing cost with the purchase price over the period you plan to play.

The official Xbox Game Studios Shop listing describes a bundle with the game, a custom SteelBook case, display packaging, a 15-inch Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago diorama, a 1:1 Carlos Santiago COG-tag replica, a lithograph, an in-game photo, and a thank-you note. The diorama requires three AAA batteries, which are not included. The listing showed the Collector’s Edition out of stock when checked; its $299.99 price and stock status may change.

Are the companion book and controller essential?
