“Gearing up for Maintainer Month this May!” was the headline of a GitHub Blog post published April 25, 2023—not an announcement for an upcoming May event. The latest edition documented by the official Maintainer Month pages is May 2026, and its schedule says the events have concluded. The initiative remains a useful way to recognize and support open-source maintainers, but check the official site for next year’s dates and participation details.

What Maintainer Month is—and when this headline was published

Maintainer Month is an initiative for open-source maintainers to gather, share their work, and be celebrated. Its project repository says GitHub started it in 2021 as Maintainer Week, with the aim of making the initiative industry-wide: Maintainer Month on GitHub.

The exact headline in this article belongs to Abigail Cabunoc Mayes’s GitHub Blog post, published April 25, 2023. Its invitations and calls to action were for that year’s upcoming May celebration; they should not be read as current event details. Read the original 2023 announcement.

What maintainers do, and why recognition matters

Maintaining open-source software involves more than writing code. In a May 6, 2026 article, the Open Source Initiative describes maintainers reviewing pull requests, triaging issues, mentoring contributors, coordinating releases, and responding to security vulnerabilities. Those are examples of responsibilities, not a measurement of how much time maintainers spend on each task. Open Source Initiative: Maintainer Month 2026.

Maintainer Month makes this often less-visible work a focus for the wider open-source community. Its participation options span public recognition, community activities, and organizational support; there is no single required way to take part.

What the 2026 edition offered

The official schedule listed 26 activities for May 2026. The edition included virtual and in-person events in different regions. These counts describe that edition only; the schedule now marks it concluded and directs readers to recordings where available and to return next year.

2026 schedule category Number of activities

Ways to participate in a future edition

GitHub’s 2026 participation guidance invited maintainers, organizations, and open-source supporters to choose activities suited to them. The following are examples from that edition’s guidance, not a guarantee that the same events, invitations, or offers will return. Check the official participation guide and schedule for current details.

If you are an individual maintainer or supporter

  • Share maintainer stories using #MaintainerMonth.
  • Meet peers at events listed for the edition.
  • Request access to the private Maintainer Community through the current participation guidance.
  • Check the event calendar for activities that suit your location and schedule.

If you represent an organization

  • Feature and recognize the maintainers whose work your organization depends on.
  • Host an event or list an event on the official calendar, following the current edition’s guidance.
  • Provide financial support through a FOSS fund or sponsorship program.

These options differ in what they contribute: sharing stories and featuring maintainers offer recognition; events and community spaces create opportunities to meet; funding provides financial support. The official guidance does not rank these approaches.

Check dates and offers before making plans

As of October 4, 2026, the official pages identify May 2026 as the concluded edition and say to check back next year. They do not establish dates, events, or participation offers for a later edition. Before committing to an event or sharing a specific invitation, confirm that it appears on the official site for the relevant year.

The 2026 partner pack listed perks, tools, and resources, but those offers are concluded; the page does not establish that they remain redeemable or that future partner offers will be the same. See the 2026 Maintainer Month partner pack for what was listed for that edition.
