Gboard offers two different ways to work with text: a handwriting keyboard that turns writing drawn with a finger or stylus into typed text, and AI writing tools that proofread or rewrite text you have already entered. Neither feature is universal: handwriting depends on language support, while the writing tools have device, language, and model requirements. Google’s current help page also says its one-tap Proofread feature is available only in US English.
Handwriting and AI writing tools do different jobs

Google’s phrase “handwrite in any text field” describes the general use pattern: select the handwriting keyboard while a text-entry field is active. It is not a guarantee that handwriting or every writing tool works in every app, language, or device.
How to handwrite in a text field with Gboard
- Open an app with a text-entry field, then open Gboard.
- Open Gboard settings and enable a handwriting layout for a supported language. Google’s handwriting instructions describe selecting the language and layout in Gboard’s settings.
- Return to the text field and use the globe or keyboard switcher to select the handwriting keyboard.
- Write in the blank keyboard area with your finger or a compatible stylus. Gboard converts the writing into text in the field.
Handwriting layouts are not available for every language. Google Play also notes that some Gboard features are unsupported on Android Go devices; check the Gboard Play listing for its current language and device notes.

- Open an app with a text-entry field and compose or enter the text you want to change.
- Open Gboard’s writing tools.
- Choose an option: Proofread, Rephrase, Professional, Friendly, Emojify, Elaborate, or Shorten.
- Review the proposed text. Tap Use this to replace the original, or Undo to restore it.
First-time setup may take a few hours and requires a stable internet connection, according to Google’s help page. Treat this as a setup requirement, not a guaranteed wait time for every device.
One-tap Proofread has a narrower availability statement
Google’s separate Proofread help page says one-tap Proofread is currently available only in the US in English. It checks entered text for typos, grammar, and punctuation. A Fix it chip applies suggested corrections, and Undo can reverse them. This specific US-English limit is narrower than the language list for Gboard’s broader writing tools; support for one tool should not be assumed from support for another.

Device, language, and model requirements
Google’s current writing-tools documentation lists Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL, along with selected models from Honor, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, POCO, realme, vivo, and Xiaomi. Its supported language locales include English variants, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. These are current documentation lists and may change; consult Google’s device and language guidance for the latest entries.
Android’s Gemini Nano feature page says Gboard writing tools require Gemini Nano v2 or higher. Device eligibility, language support, and model availability all matter, so having Gboard installed alone does not ensure the tools will appear.

What Google says about privacy and processing
In its September 3, 2025 Android announcement, Angana Ghosh, Director of Product Management, Android, wrote: “All proofreading and rewriting of text happens on the device, which ensures your data remains private.” Google’s current Help page describes writing tools as operating “in a secure, isolated environment on your device or in the cloud” and says input text is not shared with Google or any app. These statements describe different documentation at different times: the launch announcement’s on-device wording should not be treated as a blanket description of all current processing.
